This invention relates to a printing device that performs fixation after transfer, and which prevents the occurrence of no transfer even when feeding the paper backward starting printing from the next page after the final page. This printing device comprises image-formation units ( ) that transfer a toner image, a fixation unit ( ), and a control unit ( ). The control unit ( ) control adjustment of the moisture content on either the final page or leading page. In order to do that, it lowers the fixation energy of the fixation unit ( ) for the final page. There is a moisture-adjustment mechanism ( ) that reduces the moisture content of the leading page. Heat energy is applied to the leading page by the fixation unit ( ). This reduces the difference in the amount of shrinkage between the final page and the leading page, and prevents wrinkling of the leading page.

An image forming apparatus includes a reverse side print mechanism for printing on the reverse side of continuous paper, a surface print mechanism for printing on the surface of the continuous paper, and a width detecting mechanism for detecting a width of the continuous paper. The apparatus further includes a controller which, based on the detected paper width, determines a print start position on the reverse side of the continuous paper and controls the reverse side print mechanism to start printing from the determined print start position. Thus, even if the paper width is changed, the reverse side print start position can be set to a predetermined position.

An automatic cleaning method for cleaning an electrifier of an image forming apparatus. A drive mechanism moves the cleaning member to clean the electrifier. An electrification time measuring section measures an electrification time of the electrifier after the last cleaning of the electrifier. A medium detecting section discriminates whether or not a medium is located in an image forming station. A control section controls the drive mechanism to render the cleaning member to clean the electrifier when a medium is not present in the image forming station after the measured electrification time reaches a determined time. The result is that automatic electrifier cleaning can be done at an appropriate preset timing, causing an elongated service life of the electrifier.

A paper handling apparatus has a simplified structure and allows printed paper to be stacked efficiently. The paper handling apparatus receives printed paper which has undergone printing for each print job and handles the printed paper in an orderly manner. The paper handling apparatus has a stacking section in which printed paper is stacked sequentially for a plurality of jobs and an unloading mechanism for unloading stacked printed paper from the stacking section to the outside. The paper handling apparatus can be used with a printing apparatus which is connected to a large-scale information processing system or similar for printing a large volume of data.
