An apparatus is disclosed for implementing a flexible beamforming architecture. In an example aspect, the apparatus comprises an antenna array comprising a first antenna element with a first feed port and a second antenna element with a second feed port. The apparatus also comprises a wireless transceiver with a first dedicated transceiver path coupled to the first feed port and a second dedicated transceiver path coupled to the second feed port. The wireless transceiver also comprises a flexible beamforming network configured to selectively be in a first configuration that couples both the first dedicated transceiver path and the second dedicated transceiver path to a first intermediate transceiver path of the wireless transceiver, and be in a second configuration that connects the first dedicated transceiver path to the first intermediate transceiver path and connects the second dedicated transceiver path to a second intermediate transceiver path of the wireless transceiver.

Flexible beamforming architecture

A base station is disclosed that includes two separated antenna arrays. In a TDD mode of operation, both arrays are used for either transmit or receive. In a sub-band full-duplex mode of operation, one array is used to transmit downlink symbols while the remaining array is used to receive uplink symbols.

In some examples, the UE may also monitor one or more unselected CORESETs that have a quasi co-location relationship with one of the selected CORESETs.

An apparatus is disclosed for flexible beamforming using frequency-division multiplexing. In an example aspect, an apparatus includes an antenna array and a wireless transceiver with two or more dedicated receive paths respectively coupled to two or more antenna elements of the antenna array, two or more mixers, a first combiner, a second combiner, and a switching circuit. The first combiner has a first input coupled to a first dedicated receive path and an output coupled to an input of a first mixer. The second combiner has a first input coupled to an output of the first mixer and a second input coupled to an output of a second mixer. The switching circuit is configured to selectively connect a second dedicated receive path to a second input of the first combiner or connect the second dedicated receive path to an input of the second mixer.

Flexible beamforming using frequency-division multiplexing

A UE may be configured to communicate using one of analog beamforming or hybrid beamforming. The UE may receive a set of beamformed signals from a base station. The UE may determine a set of angular spread values associated with a set of clusters in a channel between the base station and the UE based on the set of beamformed signals received from the base station. The UE may transmit the set of angular spread values to the base station. The UE may receive, from the base station based on the set of angular spread values, a set of transmission ranks associated with at least one cluster of the set of clusters. The UE may communicate at least one data stream with the base station across the at least one cluster using the set of transmission ranks associated with the at least one cluster of the set of clusters.

System and method for switching beamforming modes in millimeter wave systems

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A wireless device, such as a base station and/or a user equipment (UE), may select a first resolution for a first analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog conversion process associated with a first wireless communication. The wireless device may determine that the first wireless communication is performed according to the first resolution. The wireless device may select, based at least in part on the determining, a second resolution for a second analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog conversion process associated with a second wireless communication, the first resolution being a lower resolution than the second resolution.

Methods, systems, and devices are described for calibration of an array antenna system. A device may transmit a calibration signal from a first antenna element of an antenna array. The calibration signal may be generated by modulating a first signal having a first frequency with a modulation signal having a second frequency. The device may receive the calibration signal using a second antenna element of the antenna array. The device may analyze a sideband of the received calibration signal, where the sideband may be offset in frequency from the first frequency by the second frequency. The device may calibrate the array antenna system based on or more measured properties of the sideband.

In certain aspects, a method for calibration includes setting a phase shift of a first phase shifter to a reference phase shift, wherein the first phase shifter shifts a phase of a first signal transmitted via a first antenna. The method also includes sequentially setting a phase shift of a second phase shifter to each one of a first plurality of phase shifts, wherein the second phase shifter shifts a phase of a second signal transmitted via a second antenna. The method further includes receiving the first and second signals at a receiver via a third antenna, and, for each one of the first plurality of phase shifts, measuring a magnitude of a third signal at the receiver, wherein the third signal includes the received first and second signals. The method further includes determining a calibration phase shift based on one or more of the measured magnitudes.
