Provided is a method for manufacturing an optical fiber glass preform in which a refractive index distribution is stable in a longitudinal direction of the glass preform. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber glass preform includes: depositing a porous glass preform by a vapor phase method; and sintering the porous glass preform in a heating region, when sintering the porous glass preform, the porous glass preform being inserted into a vessel of a sintering furnace, and an inside of the vessel being heated with a heater installed on an outer periphery of the vessel to form the heating region. The sintering is started after a surface temperature difference of the porous glass preform in a longitudinal direction is made 50° C. or lower.

The refractive index of the first clad layer decreases continuously from the inside to the outside, reaching a maximum value at radial position r1 and a minimum value at radial position r2. The refractive index of the second clad layer increases continuously from the inside to the outside, reaching a minimum value at radial position r2 and a maximum value at radial position r3.

A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform that includes preparing a glass cylinder with inner and outer surfaces forming at least part of a cladding portion are repeatedly polished, and a glass core rod that includes a core portion having a higher refractive index than the cladding portion; and inserting the core rod into the glass cylinder and heating the glass cylinder and core rod to form a single body. The repeated polishing of the inner surface of the glass cylinder includes passing pure water that does not contain a cutting fluid over the inner surface for at least the final polishing. The polishing is preferably performed using a polishing cloth to which are affixed diamond abrasive grains. The glass core rod and the glass cylinder are preferably formed of composite quartz glass.

There is provided an apparatus for supplying a hydrogen gas to a quartz glass manufacturing apparatus including a burner that generates an oxyhydrogen flame when supplied with the hydrogen gas, where the apparatus includes: a first hydrogen supply system that supplies a hydrogen gas in which isomers are in equilibrium; a second hydrogen supply system that supplies a hydrogen gas in which isomers are out of equilibrium; a flow rate control section that includes: a valve that changes a flow rate of the hydrogen gas to be supplied to the burner; a first flow rate measuring section that measures the flow rate of the hydrogen gas to be supplied to the burner by measuring a heat capacity; and a control section that controls the valve in such a manner that a measured value obtained by the first flow rate measuring section approaches a set value input from outside; a second flow rate measuring section that measures the flow rate of the hydrogen gas to be supplied to the burner by measuring a different factor than the heat capacity; and a set value compensating section that compensates the set value by multiplying the set value by a ratio between the measured value obtained by the first flow rate measuring section and a measured value obtained by the second flow rate measuring section.

A method of manufacturing an optical fiber base material includes: forming a porous glass base material by depositing glass particles; providing a vessel which employs a composite tube, the composite tube including a portion formed by jacketing a first quartz glass containing aluminum equal to or less than 0.01 ppm with a second quartz glass containing aluminum equal to or more than 15 ppm; introducing dehydration reaction gas and inert gas into the vessel; heating the jacketed portion in the vessel which contains the dehydration reaction gas and the inert gas; and inserting the porous glass base material into the heated vessel to dehydrate and sinter the porous glass base material.

The method of manufacturing an optical fiber base material including: producing a core member for the optical fiber base material by dehydrating and transparently vitrifying a base material formed by depositing glass particles; and drawing the core member and then adding a cladding thereto at a desired core to cladding ratio, wherein the dehydrating includes suspending the base material in a furnace tube having a heating region in a first atmosphere at a first temperature, the base material passing through the heating region as upwardly moving, and the transparently vitrifying includes situating the base material below once and then allowing the base material to pass through the heating region in a second atmosphere at a second temperature as upwardly moving again.

An optical fiber includes a clad portion and a core portion surrounded by the clad portion. Here, the clad portion is formed by substantially pure quartz, and the core portion has a higher refractive index than the clad portion. The optical fiber is characterized in that a relative refractive index difference of a center of the core portion falls within a range from 0.15% to 0.30%, and a maximum relative refractive index difference of the core portion falls within a range from 0.4% to 0.6%. Here, it is preferable that an average relative refractive index difference of the core portion falls within a range from 0.30% to 0.40%. Here, a mode field diameter of the optical fiber falls within a range from 8.6 &#x3bc;m to 9.5 &#x3bc;m at 1310 nm, and a cable cutoff wavelength of the optical fiber is equal to or lower than 1260 nm. Note that, after the optical fiber is subjected to hydrogen aging, a loss of the optical fiber is preferably equal to or lower than 0.4 dB/km at 1383 nm.

An apparatus for fabricating a soot preform for an optical fiber. The soot preform is fabricated by depositing glass particles on a starting rod capable of being rotated and pulled up. The apparatus comprises elements as follows. A reaction chamber is used for depositing the glass particles on the starting rod. An upper room is located above the reaction chamber for receiving the soot preform formed in the upper portion of the reaction chamber. At least one core burner is installed in the reaction chamber. A gas-supplying inlet is located in the top part of the sidewall of the reaction chamber closest to burner(s), and a gas-exhausting outlet is located in the top part of another sidewall opposite to the gas-supplying inlet. In addition, at least one cladding burner is installed in the reaction chamber. Thus, the exhausting efficiency for the stray glass particles is increased and the bubbles and impurities in the resulting preform are reduced such that the optical property in the lengthwise direction is stable.
