A local dimming method and a liquid crystal display using the same are provided. The local dimming method includes segmenting an input image into N&#xd7;M (where N and M are positive integer greater than n) blocks; determining representative values of the blocks, which define average luminance of the respective blocks; analyzing the input image; setting a spatial filter mask having a size of n&#xd7;n (where n is a positive integer greater than 3 and equal to or smaller than 10), increasing the number of coefficients greater than 0 in the spatial filter mask when the input image is determined as a dark image, and decreasing the number of coefficients greater than 0 in the spatial filter mask when the input image is determined as a bright image; and multiplying the block representative values by coefficients of the spatial filter mask to determine a dimming value for each block.

Local dimming method and liquid crystal display

A method of compensating for pixel data includes extending a side portion and a corner portion of a real screen to set an virtual screen, setting dimming values of the virtual screen using dimming values of the real screen, calculating an amount of light of each of pixels on the real screen using the dimming values of the virtual screen mapped to a predetermined analysis area, and multiplying the amount of light of each pixel by a gain of each pixel to modulate pixel data.

An LCD device and a driving method thereof are provided. The LCD device includes a panel, a timing controller, and a backlight unit. The panel is driven by a data driver and a gate driver. The timing controller controls the data driver and the gate driver. The backlight unit turns on or off a light source according to a dimming control signal transferred from the timing controller. The backlight unit is configured such that a turn-off delay time of a light source turned off according to the dimming control signal is shorter than a turn-on delay time of a light source turned on according to the dimming control signal.

The local dimming control circuit adjusts the dimming value of each block based on the result of an analysis of input data, calculates and interpolates sampling gain values of predetermined sampling positions positioned inside each block so as to compensate for a change amount of a luminance resulting from the dimming value of each block, obtains a gain value of each pixel, and modulate the input data to be applied to a corresponding pixel based on the gain value of each pixel.

Liquid crystal display and local dimming control method thereof capable of reducing the size of an operation algorithm

An image processing unit, a stereoscopic image display using the same, and an image processing method are disclosed. The image processing unit includes a data modulation unit, that receives 3D image data including left eye image data and right eye image data, compares a pixel data of the left eye image and a pixel data of the right eye image corresponding to the same coordinate of the previously set mask with each other, calculates the number of cases where a difference between the same pixel data of the left eye image data and the right eye image data is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold value, and modulates the pixel data of the left eye image and the pixel data of the right eye image inside the mask using a first coefficient group of the mask when the number of cases is greater than a predetermined value.
