A composition comprising a purified extract isolated fromvar.containing abundant amount of active ingredient or the compounds isolated therefrom as an active ingredient for treating a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the use thereof. Inventive purified extract and compounds showed potent anti-COPD activity without beta-2-receptor agonistic response through various in vivo tests as well as in vitro test. Therefore, it can be used as the therapeutics or functional health food for treating and preventing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The present invention relates to inventive novel industrialized method for preparing purified extract containing more abundant active ingredients such as catalpol derivatives from the extract ofvarthan that prepared by the conventional preparation method disclosed in the prior art and the therapeutics or functional health food comprising the purified extract for treating and preventing inflammatory, allergic or asthmatic disease. The purified extract showed more potent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy and anti-asthma activity than that prepared by the conventional preparation method disclosed in the prior art through various in vivo tests such as inhibition test on the reproduction of eosinophil, the release of immunoglobulin and inflammatory chemokines in plasma and bronchoalveolar fluid as well as the suppression of airway hyperresponsiveness and goblet cell hyperplasia in a OVA-sensitized/challenged mouse model.

Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition simultaneously having a rapid acting property and a long-acting property, comprising a sustained-release part coated with a water-insoluble polymer on the surface, comprising a first active pharmaceutical ingredient, at least one release control base selected from the group consisting of water-insoluble polymer, and water-soluble viscous polymer, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; and, an immediate release part comprising a second active pharmaceutical ingredient and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The pharmaceutical composition exhibits independent release properties of the immediate release part and the sustained-release part by coating the surface of the sustained-release part comprising an active pharmaceutical ingredient, a release control base and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier with a water-insoluble polymer to separate it from the immediate release part, and it may be prepared by a relatively simple process without specification limitation to the contents and the kinds of usable pharmaceutically active ingredients.
