A method for performing oilfield operations for an oilfield having a subterranean formation with an underground reservoir therein, the oilfield being provided with at least one wellsite with oilfield equipment for extracting fluid from the underground reservoir, involving collecting data comprising trajectory and earth properties associated with a planned well for a geoscience application to obtain a geoscience model, invoking a well planning system integrated with the geoscience application, extracting the trajectory and earth properties from the geoscience model to obtain an extracted trajectory and extracted earth properties, determining at least one parameter for the planned well based on the extracted trajectory and the extracted earth properties, and displaying the at least one parameter associated with the planned well within a geological context of the geoscience application to allow refinement of the planned well for efficient fluid extraction from the underground reservoir.

Well planning system and method

A method for measuring technical maturity index (TMI) for oilfield operations of an oilfield, the oilfield having a subterranean formation with geological structures and reservoirs therein. The method includes sending an assessment including a listing of a number of capabilities to at least one user associated with a first oilfield operation, where each of the number of capabilities is associated with a technology for the oilfield operations, and receiving a first number of responses in response to the assessment for the first oilfield operation, where each of the first number of responses specifies one of the number of capabilities and a level of adoption corresponding to the one of the number of capabilities. The method further includes obtaining a TMI for the first oilfield operation using the first number of responses and presenting the TMI for the first oilfield operation.

A Software System, known as an Automatic Well Planning Risk Assessment Software System, is adapted to determine and display risk information in response to a plurality of input data by: receiving the plurality of input data, the input data including a plurality of input data calculation results; comparing each calculation result of the plurality of input data calculation results with each logical expression of a plurality of logical expressions; ranking by the logical expression the calculation result; and generating a plurality of ranked risk values in response thereto, each of the plurality of ranked risk values representing an input data calculation result that has been ranked by the logical expression as either a high risk or a medium risk or a low risk; generating the risk information in response to the plurality of ranked risk values; and displaying the risk information.

A method is disclosed for determining and displaying risk information in response to a plurality of input data, the input data including a plurality of input data calculation results, comprising the steps of: comparing each calculation result of the plurality of input data calculation results of the input data with each logical expression of a plurality of logical expressions; ranking by the logical expression the calculation result; and generating a plurality of ranked individual risks in response to the ranking step, each of the plurality of ranked individual risks representing an input data calculation result that has been ranked by the logical expression as having either a high risk severity or a medium risk severity or a low risk severity; generating the risk information in response to the plurality of ranked individual risks; and displaying the risk information, the displaying step including displaying the risk information on a risk information display.

A method of well planning in an automatic well planning system comprises the steps of: selecting one or more tasks in a task manager; verifying by a task dependency a proper order of the one or more tasks; retrieving by the task manager from a task base one or more sets of instructions associated with the one or more tasks selected in the task manager and verified by the task dependency; retrieving by the task manager from an access manager one or more sets of input data associated with the one or more sets of instructions retrieved by the task manager from the task base; verifying that each set of input data of the one or more sets of input data retrieved by the task manager from the access manager is received by a corresponding one of the one or more sets of instructions retrieved by the task manager from the task base; executing, by the task manager, the one or more sets of instructions and using, by the task manager, the one or more sets of input data during the executing step thereby generating a set of results; and recording or displaying, by a task view base, the set of results on a recorder or display device.

Method and apparatus and program storage device including an integrated well planning workflow control system with process dependencies

A bit selection method will generate and record or display a sequence of drill bits chosen from among a plurality of bit candidates adapted for drilling an Earth formation in response to input data representing Earth formation characteristics of the formation to be drilled by: comparing the input data representing the characteristics of the formation to be drilled with a set of historical data including a plurality of sets of Earth formation characteristics and a corresponding plurality of sequences of drill bits to be used in connection with the sets of Earth formation characteristics, and locating a substantial match between the characteristics of the formation to be drilled associated with the input data and at least one of the plurality of sets of Earth formation characteristics associated with the set of historical data; when the substantial match is found, generating one of the plurality of sequences of drill bits in response thereto; and recording or displaying the one of the plurality of sequences of drill bits on a recorder or display device.
