A separator for a lithium secondary battery, a method for manufacturing the same, and a lithium secondary battery including the separator, where the separator includes a porous polymer substrate having a plurality of pores, and a porous coating layer on at least one surface of the porous polymer substrate. The porous coating layer includes a plurality of inorganic particles and a binder polymer. The binder polymer includes a thermosetting phenolic resin having at least one hydroxyl group and at least one aromatic group. When the separator is exposed to high temperature, due to ignition or the like, the thermosetting phenolic resin in the porous coating layer is thermally cured to form a network structure by virtue of the structural characteristics of the separator. As a result, the separator has improved heat resistance as compared to the conventional separators and shows high adhesion to an electrode.

The selected binder resin composition material, organic solvent (electrolyte) or both may be used to manufacture a battery to prevent possible degradation of the battery due to a possible decrease in interlayer adhesion of the resin caused by dissolution of the polymer in the resin as well as a possible increase in resistance to ion flow in an electrolyte in the battery due to the dissolution of the polymer into the electrolyte.

The present invention refers to a separator and an electrochemical device having the same. The separator of the present invention comprises a non-woven fabric substrate obtained from fibers and having multiple pores formed between the fibers; and a polymer coating layer formed on a part or the whole of the surface of the fibers, wherein the polymer coating layer comprises a polymer having a tensile strength of 80 MPa or more, a tensile modulus of 3,000 MPa or more and a flexural modulus of 3,000 MPa or more. The separator of the present invention can reduce costs for manufacturing electrochemical devices, and it can control the size of pores present in the non-woven fabric substrate to prevent the generation of a leak current and provide improved mechanical strength.
