A stripper/packer which also serves as a blowout preventer includes a split bonnet. The split bonnet comprises a pair of opposed bonnet halves that may be hydraulically actuated into contact with each other and locked in place to form a bonnet over a packer chamber with the body of the packer. The bonnet halves may be locked together by hydraulic actuation of a latch pin or a pair of pins, or a sleeve may be inserted to hold the bonnet halves together. The split bonnet feature provides clear and easy access to a packer element within the packer chamber with coiled tubing or other tubular member through the packer, or with the coiled tubing withdrawn from the packer.

The present invention provides a blowout preventer in which a first set of hydraulic ports communicate with either side of a first piston coupled to a first piston rod, a second set of hydraulic ports communicate with either side of a second piston coupled to a second piston rod, and the first and second pistons and associated piston rods may be actuated independent of each other. Each piston rod is coupled to a ram, and preferably, the first piston rod is coupled to a pipe ram and the second piston rod is coupled to a slip ram. A feature of the present invention provides that all of these elements are contained within a single chamber extending laterally of and communicating with the bore of a BOP.

Blowout preventer for coiled tubing

A stripper/packer for use in a stack at a well head provides horizontal actuation and side access. This configuration enables maintenance of the packer in place. It also provides for the retraction of the packer to a diameter greater than the inside diameter of the packer to permit the withdrawal of coiled tubing with accessories attached. A hydraulically actuated rod has a pusher plate attached at one end with bushings and bushing carriers attached thereto. The bushings and bushing carriers hold a packer element in abutting relation to an energizer which evenly distributes pressure from the pusher plate to the packer element. The bushings and bushing carriers also hold the packer element so that, upon retraction of the rod, the entire assembly is withdrawn from the bore of the stripper/packer.

Stripper/packer

An annular packer (P) with an axial bore (21) includes an elastomer body (23) with inserts (22) partially embedded therein and spaced circumferentially about the axial bore (21). The inserts (22) each support an element (24') embedded in the elastomer body (23) which move into the axial packer bore (21) beyond the inserts when an external compressive force is applied to the elastomer body to reduce the diameter of the axial bore (21) and to provide support for and inhibit extrusion of the elastomer body (23) that is moved into the axial bore by the compressive force.

Annular packer and insert

Housing means are adapted to be secured adjacent the upper end of a well bore with latch means supported therein for latching with the fishing neck on the upper end of a wire line tool when it is retrieved from the well bore. The housing means includes release means constructed and arranged to unlatch and maintain the latch means unlatched from the fishing neck on the upper end of the wire line tool when desired.
