A method for distinguishing among a first group of microorganisms belonging to a first taxon of Gram negative bacteria, the first group of bacteria exhibiting a mechanism of resistance to a treatment; a second group of microorganisms belonging to a second taxon of Gram negative bacteria, the second taxon of bacteria being different than said first taxon, and exhibiting a mechanism of resistance to a treatment identical to the mechanism of the first group; and a third group of Gram negative bacteria that is not resistant to the treatment.

The use of two substrates, one as described above and the other specific for all or some members of the genus, and a reaction medium containing such a substrate or such a combination of substrates are disclosed. An identification method which exploits such culture media is also disclosed. The invention is particularly applicable in the field of diagnosis.

The invention relates to a method and a medium for microbiological analysis by biochemical means involving chromogenic or fluorogenic substrates that react with enzymes (esterases) specific for the target strains. One object of the invention is to improve the sensitivity, initial translucence, stability and ease of use of such detection/identification media. For this purpose the medium according to the invention is characterized in that it is in a stable, ready-to-use liquid or gel form and in that it contains a solubilizer and stabilizer selected from fatty acid sorbitan esters, bile salts and mixtures thereof, as well as a selective activator selected from alkylsulfate salts, for example the sodium salts. The medium can comprise a solvent, for example dimethyl sulfoxide. The invention further relates to the method of obtaining this medium and to the use of products of the sodium alkylsulfate type as selective activators in such media. Method and medium for the detection/identification of microorgranisms with esterase activity

A medium for biological analysis by biochemical means involving chromogenic or fluorogenic substrates that react with enzymes (esterases and/or osidases and/or peptidases and/or sulfatases and/or phosphatases) specific for the target strains is that is in a stable, ready-to-use liquid or gel form and contains at least one emulsifying stabilizer of the fatty acid sorbitan ester/fatty acid type and at least one solvent (dimethyl sulfoxide). This medium is obtained by mixing a stock solution of esterase and/or osidase and/or peptidase and/or sulfatase and/or phosphatase substrates in the solvent, and the emulsifying stabilizer, with some of the constituents of the culture medium.
