Method and apparatus for reducing driver energy consumption of drivers of a display device each supplied by an input codeword as e.g. for data drivers of a plasma display panel supplied by sequences of subfield data bits in form of a codeword comprising a predetermined number of bits are recommended, wherein the apparatus comprises a driver transition energy limitation circuit for toggling bits of the input codeword applied to the driver transition energy limitation circuit and providing a codeword reducing the driver energy consumption. A toggle map, which is generated from a combination of a transition map determining a bit in the input codeword if toggled reduces energy consumption and a flag map determining a number of least significant bits exceeding a cell energy limit value, is applied to an input codeword for the driver to toggle bits of said input codeword for reducing driver energy consumption without a perceivable image quality degradation. Method and apparatus are advantageously applicable for driver overheat protection and eco mode to reduce driver energy consumption without a perceivable image quality degradation.

Method and apparatus for reducing driver energy consumption

The invention relates to a method of estimating motion between two video frames. According to the invention, the motion estimation is done by using first one motion estimation in the horizontal direction and then one motion estimation in the vertical direction. Preferably, a plurality of motion estimations in the horizontal direction are used alternately with motion estimations in the vertical direction. It allows reducing the complexity of the estimation.

In many cases it is not possible to reproduce enough video levels on a PDP due to timing issues or a specific solution against the false contour effect. In such cases dithering is used to render all required levels. In order to reduce the visibility of the dithering noise there is performed a common change of the sub-field organization together with a modification of the input video data through an appropriate transformation curve based on the human visual system luminance sensitivity (Weber-Fechner law).

A method and apparatus for processing video pictures for dynamic false contour effect compensation is provided wherein the video picture consists of pixels having at least one color component (RGB) the color component values being digitally coded with a digital code word, hereinafter called sub-field code word (SF-R, SF-G, F-B). To each bit of a sub-field code word (SF-R, SF-G, SF-B) a certain duration is assigned hereinafter called a sub-field, during which a color component of the pixel can be activated for light generation. The digital code words have n bits, characterized in that among a set p possible video levels for the at least one color component (RGB) a sub-set of m video levels with n&#x3c;m&#x3c;p is selected, which is used for light generation. The m values are selected according to the rule that the temporal center of gravity (CGCGCG) for the light generation of the corresponding sub-field code words grow continuously with the video level, apart from possible exceptions in the low video level range up to a first predefined limit and/or in the high video level range from a second predefined limit on.
