Embodiments are disclosed that relate to modifying a display of a portable electronic device to account for ambient light. For example, one disclosed embodiment provides a method comprising determining an ambient light history including a plurality of ambient light color conditions sensed over a duration of device operation by an ambient light sensor, reading a display-ready image having a plurality of pixels from an image source, adjusting a manner in which the display-ready image is displayed by color-shifting at least a subset of the plurality of pixels based on the plurality of ambient light color conditions in the ambient light history to thereby generate a color-modified image, and displaying the color-modified image on the display of the portable electronic device.

Ambient light context-aware display

A system and method are disclosed for controlling an amount of ambient light transmitted to the eye of a wearer through an NED device. A passive component such as a photochromic coating may be applied to a visor of the NED device to block light. An active component may be included to augment the light dimming capabilities of the passive component.

Near eye display multi-component dimming system

A system and method are disclosed for use in a virtual reality environment including a head mounted display device and a processing unit. In examples, the processing unit adjusts an amount by which left and right displayed images overlap each other at a given distance, such as the focal distance, from the head mounted display device.

AR display with adjustable stereo overlap zone

A curved display for an electronic device, comprises a main substrate, a display circuit component, an OLED stack and a secondary substrate. The main substrate has a first curved section extending from a first end of the main substrate and a longitudinally adjacent second planar section extending to define a second end of the main substrate opposite the first end. The first curved section comprises at least one flat glass member bent into a curved configuration, and the second planar section comprises a flat segment of the flat glass member. The display circuit component is mounted to an upper surface of the second planar section, the display circuit component being positioned within and spaced from edges of the second planar section. The OLED stack is positioned over the first curved section. The secondary substrate comprises a flat glass member bent into a curved configuration and secured to the first curved section of the main substrate with the OLED stack positioned between the first curved section of the main substrate and the secondary substrate.

Methods for producing a glass-based non planar digital display

Technology is disclosed for optimizing a near-eye display using a waveguide. A first waveband for a first color narrower than the full spectral bandwidth for the first color and a second waveband for a second color adjacent to the first color in the visible spectrum are generated in image light of an image generation unit like a microdisplay. The first waveband and the second waveband are coupled into a same layer of a diffractive waveguide. An input grating of the same layer of the waveguide has a grating wavelength band approximately matching a waveband extensive with the first waveband and the second waveband. A converted green light emitting diode (LED) may be used for obtaining a first waveband centered around 515 nm in some examples. One of more of the wavebands may be obtained using filters, for example filters using dichroic mirrors, quantum dots or a combination of these.

Display efficiency optimization by color filtering

The technology provides a dimming module for a near-eye display (NED) device that controls an amount of ambient light that passes through the transmissive near-eye display to a user. The dimming module includes at least one electrochromic cell that enables variable density dimming so that the NED device may be used in an augmented reality (AR) and/or virtual reality (VR) application. The electrochromic cell may be a monochrome electrochromic cell having stacked layers of, a monochrome electrochromic compound layer and insulator sandwiched between a pair of transparent substrates and conductors. A current may be applied to the conductor layers to control the amount of dimming in response to a dimming value. A NED device having a dimming module may be included in a visor, or other type of head-mounted display (HMD). The dimming module may be flat and supported by a flat waveguide mount in the user's field of view.

Dimming module for augmented and virtual reality

Embodiments are disclosed that relate to touch and proximity sensing with a touch sensor that utilizes a conductive polarizer as a touch sensor electrode. For example, one disclosed embodiment provides a touch sensitive display device including a display having a transparent electrode layer including a plurality of transparent electrodes, a conductive polarizer coupled to the transparent electrode layer via a dielectric layer, a touch sensing driver circuit electrically connected to one of the transparent electrode layer and the conductive polarizer, and a touch sensing receiver circuit electrically connected to another of the transparent electrode layer and the conductive polarizer.

A method of producing a curved display for an electronic device comprises providing a substrate comprising a first curvable section comprising at least one flat glass member and a second longitudinally adjacent planar section, placing the curvable section in contact with a member having a curved surface, urging the curvable section towards the curved surface of the member and maintaining the curvable section in a curved configuration to thereby form the curved display having the adjacent planar section. A curved display and a mobile device having a curved display are also disclosed.

An electronic device includes a backlight unit and a liquid crystal layer adjacent the backlight unit. The backlight unit has a plurality of planar emission devices distributed over a viewable display area. The plurality of planar emission devices are disposed in a configurable zone arrangement having a plurality of zones of the viewable area. Each zone includes at least one planar emission device. The liquid crystal layer is configured to selectively filter light generated by the plurality of planar emission devices. The electronic device further includes a processor coupled to the backlight unit and configured to control a brightness level of the at least one planar emission device in each zone separately from other planar emission devices in other zones.

Configurable, localized backlighting with planar emission devices

Apparatus and method for printing sound code icons on photographic prints produced from filmstrips having images with varying orientation, size and or format. A sound-on-print print gate includes a pair of selectable LED icon printers for printing a binary coded sound icon on either edge of the photographic print depending on normal or inverted image orientation. The icon printers are mounted for translational movement lengthwise of the print paper, the positioning being determined by the format of the print: panoramic, normal or HDTV aspect ratios. A computer controlled system is disclosed which determines the orientation, size and format and positions the icon printers in response thereto at the print gate.
