An approach is provided in which an information handling system detects a reduced capacity on a PCIe link that interfaces a host system to a PCIe I/O expansion drawer over a first/second physical cable. The information handling system verifies a first/second connection to a first/second connector on the PCIe I/O expansion drawer, receives a first/second set of vital product data over the first/second physical cable, and determines that the first physical cable and the second physical cable are connected to the same PCIe I/O expansion drawer based on analyzing the first/second set of vital product data. The information handling system then suspends operation of one or more components corresponding to the PCIe link and trains the PCIe link to an increased capacity. In turn, the information handling system resumes operation of the one or more components and restores the PCIe link to the increased capacity.

Concurrent maintenance of an input/output (I/O) adapter backing a virtual network interface connection (VNIC) including receiving, by a hardware management console (HMC), a request to disconnect the I/O adapter from a computing system, wherein the computing system comprises a logical partition and virtual I/O server; instructing, by the HMC over a communications link, the virtual I/O server to deconfigure and remove the server VNIC driver; determining, by the HMC, that a replacement I/O adapter is installed on the computing system; and in response to determining that the replacement I/O adapter is installed on the computing system, instructing, by the HMC over the communications link, the virtual I/O server to add and configure a replacement server VNIC driver.

A method utilizes event-driven reoptimization to reallocate one or more logical partitions within a pool of logically-partitioned data processing systems in a logically-partitioned computing environment in response to detection of a system event that is likely to increase or decrease the collective resource demands of logical partitions resident in a logically-partitioned computing environment. The reoptimization may be used to consolidate logical partitions on fewer processor nodes to improve the potential for powering down hardware resources and thereby reduce power consumption.

Event-driven reoptimization of logically-partitioned environment for power management

An approach is provided in which an information handling system suspends operation of one or more components corresponding to a PCIe link that is operating at a reduced capacity. The information handling system then trains the PCIe link to an increased capacity while the one or more components are suspended in operation. In turn, the information handling system resumes operation of the one or more components and restores the PCIe link to the increased capacity.

An approach is provided in which a host system receives a request to power down a selected I/O module located in a PCIe I/O expansion drawer. The host system identifies at least one cable card located in the host system that corresponds to the selected I/O module and transmits at least one set of sideband signals to the PCIe I/O expansion drawer through at least one set of PCIe cable links. The host system, in turn, inhibits the transmission of the at least one set of sideband signals to power down the selected I/O module.

The invention addresses these and other problems associated with the prior art by providing an apparatus and program product that utilize event-driven reoptimization to reallocate one or more logical partitions within a pool of logically-partitioned data processing systems in response to detection of a system event that is likely to increase or decrease the collective resource demands of logical partitions resident in a logically-partitioned computing environment. In some instances, for example, the reoptimization may be used to consolidate logical partitions on fewer processor nodes to improve the potential for powering down hardware resources and thereby reduce power consumption.

A method, system and computer program product are provided for detecting and configuring an external input/output (IO) enclosure in a computer system. A PCIE Host Bridge (PHB) in a system unit is connected to a plurality of PCIE add-in card slots. One or more cables are connected between the PHB and the external enclosure. System firmware including detecting and configuring functions uses sideband structure for detecting a PCIE cable card and configuring the external input/output (IO) enclosure.

At system power on an SRIOV adapter having been relocated to a different slot while the system was powered off is automatically detected, and the configuration data associated with the adapter automatically updated so that it remains associated with the adapter in the adapter's new location.

A management system for managing computer resources assigned by a hypervisor to one or more logical partitions and/or one or more appliance partitions in a multi-user computer system receives login information from a new user logging into the computer system through a service interface (e.g. a hardware management console) or a non-service interface, builds a conflict list, and sends the conflict list for presentation to the new user. The new user is notified of any users that are logged into any part of the computer system that could conflict with the new user's actions. Such users may be logged into the computer system through service and/or non-service interfaces. In one embodiment, the new user can choose to continue logging in irrespective of any conflicts shown. After choosing to continue, the new user is preferably requested to input an end-time. This end-time may be displayed, in turn, to all subsequent users that log into any part of the computer system that could cause conflict. The management system is preferably a component of the hypervisor.

Managing conflicts between multiple users accessing a computer system having shared resources assigned to one or more logical partitions and one or more appliance partitions

In an embodiment, a power off command is received that specifies a slot in a computer that connects to a first adapter. The first adapter comprises a physical and virtual functions. Data transfer from a logical partition to the virtual function is stopped, a lock of the virtual function held by the logical partition is released, and the slot is powered off. Ownership of the virtual function is retained by the logical partition while the lock is released and the slot is powered off. A power on command is received that specifies the slot that connects to a second adapter. The second adapter comprises the physical and virtual functions. In response to the power on command, the slot is powered on, and the lock is obtained of the virtual function for the logical partition.

Techniques are disclosed for conveying which hardware components of a logically partitioned computer system are assigned to a selected logical partition of the computer system. Partition information for the computer system is received. Further, a request is received from a user to view which hardware components of the computer system are assigned to a selected logical partition of the computer system. Based on the received partition information, one or more hardware components are determined that are assigned to the selected logical partition. Based on the determined hardware components, a virtual model of the computer system is generated that visually distinguishes hardware components assigned to the selected logical partition from hardware components not assigned to the selected logical partition. The virtual model is output responsive to the request.

Visual feedback system for multiple partitions on a server

A hypervisor-based facility is provided for communicating between a hardware management console (HMC) and a logical partition of a data processing system. The facility includes: packaging a request or response of a source endpoint as cargo in a generic transport primitive, the source endpoint being either an HMC or a logical partition of the data processing system; and forwarding the generic transport primitive from the source endpoint to a target endpoint via the hypervisor. The forwarding includes receiving the transport primitive at the hypervisor and forwarding the cargo of the transport primitive to the target endpoint. The cargo includes the request or response from the source endpoint, and the hypervisor forwards the cargo absent inspection or parsing of that cargo. The target endpoint is the other one of the logical partition or the hardware management console of the data processing system.
