An audio visual alarm device that can adapt to a familial look is provided. The audio visual alarm device can include an alarm housing having a footprint of a first shape, and a cover housing having a footprint of a second shape. The alarm housing can include circuitry for operating the audio visual alarm device, and the second shape can be different from the first shape. The cover housing can be configured to accommodate the alarm housing and affix to the alarm housing to give the alarm housing an appearance corresponding to the second shape. At least one portion of the alarm housing can protrude through the cover housing.

An alarm indicating output appliance can be releasably affixed to a mounting plate. The plate carries wire receiving terminals which couple to the appliance. In the absence of the appliance, at least two of the terminals can be short circuited.

A connection assembly includes a housing and a connector element. The connector element can be attached to the housing and the combined unit can be attached to an electrical box prior to affixing an electrical device thereto.

Cover for surface mounted alarm unit

A plastic mounting plate closes a electrical box which delivers wires to an alarm unit or emergency light or the like. The alarm unit is mounted to the mounting plate by a snap connection and a tab-in-slot connection, without requiring the use of a tool. The mounting plate is connected to the electrical box by screws which engage threaded holes provided by the electrical box. The mounting plate can be mounted to either a single-wide electrical box or a double-wide (4&#xd7;4) electrical box and provides corresponding holes for connection to either box. An alternate mounting plate for a single-wide electrical box is also provided.

Fastenerless connection for output device

A multi-candela output device for indicating alarm conditions has an output section, visible after installation, and a mounting section not visible after installation. A candela output level can be set by positioning a manually adjustable member on the mounting section. An indicator of the setting is visible on the output section.

Selectable candela strobe unit

A plastic mounting plate closes a junction box which delivers wires to an alarm unit or emergency light or the like. The mounting plate is connected to the junction box by screws which engage threaded holes provided by the junction box. The mounting plate can be mounted to either a single-wide junction box or a double-wide junction box and provides corresponding holes for connection to either box. An alternate mounting plate for a single-wide junction box is also provided. An alarm device can be connected to the mounting plate directly by screws or by a combination of a single screw and a tab which is received into a slot onto the mounting plate. The mounting plate can be color-coded for a particular alarm service, such as fire, weather warnings, or other emergency condition.

Modular mounting plate

A system for mounting two alarm-indicating or condition-sensing modules side-by-side onto a junction box provides installation flexibility to locate a particular module on the right or left side of the respective other module. A loudspeaker module can be centered on the junction box and a strobe light module can be placed either on the right side or the left side of the junction box by 180.degree. rotation of a common elongated rectangular frame and 180.degree. rotation of the strobe light module with respect to the frame. The loudspeaker module includes fastener receiving holes aligned with fastener engagement holes of a standard 4'.times.4' junction box for securing the loudspeaker module and the common frame with the strobe light module attached thereto, to the junction box. The frame includes a recessed region to receive and support the strobe light module. A shroud can be provided under the frame to cover a surface mounted junction box and to provide an integrated and architecturally pleasing installation.

Modular alarm unit

A family of covers having identical indented base regions for receiving a plurality of diverse alarm indicating and/or condition-sensing modules thereon. The alarm indicating modules each have a common 'footprint' for being snugly received into the indented base region of each cover. A family of covered modules thus assembled, achieves an architecturally pleasing, universal design, and reduces tool and manufacturing costs by producing common parts among the varied alarm indicating devices.
