This invention is concerned with novel polysilanes containing olefinic groups which are prepared by reactions of halogen-containing organosilane monomers or mixtures thereof with sodium metal in an appropriate solvent or mixture of solvents. Such polysilane polymers are soluble and thermoplastic, and can be directly converted to silicon carbide compositions by pyrolysis at atmospheric pressure.

A novel branched hydrosilyl-modified polycarbosilane which can be pyrolized to obtain improved yields of silicon carbide. This novel branched hydrosilyl-modified polycarbosilane can be prepared in a one-step reaction from mixtures of silane monomers containing vinyl or halomethyl moieties with silane monomers containing hydrosilyl groups.

A platinum catalyzed addition of allylamine and N-substituted allyl amines to trialkoxysilanes or alkylalkoxysilanes is improved by running the reaction under pressure at 110.degree.-210.degree. C. and in the presence of a reaction promoter. Organic ethers including polyethers having two CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(R)CH.sub.2 -- end groups per molecule wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group are reacted with organohydrosiloxanes under hydrosilation reaction conditions in the presence of a platinum catalyst preferably a neutral platinum catalyst, to form very useful nonhydrolyzable siloxane block copolymers. Novel nonhydrolyzable linear block copolymers substantially free of silicon-bonded hydrogen are obtained with linear dihydropolyorganosiloxane reactants and linear ethers or polyethers. The linear block copolymers made with the linear dihydrosiloxanes and polyethers are particularly useful as surfactants and foam stabilizers for the preparation of polyurethane foams. The very low degree (if any) of isomerization of the CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(R)CH.sub.2 -- group to unreactive species during the hydrosilation reaction results in the unexpectedly high molecular weight of the copolymers of the present invention.

This invention relates to ion-pair-containing siloxane compounds that are extremely effective as surface tension depressants. The compounds of the present invention contain both anionic and cationic substituents and can be formed by metathesis reactions between metallic salts of anionic silicone or organic surface-active compounds and halide salts of quaternary ammonium silicone or organic surface-active compounds. The compounds of the invention are relatively pH insensitive when compared to siloxanes bearing anionic and cationic substituents that are formed by proton transfer. Thus, the organosilicon compounds of the invention will remain stable despite changes in pH of the mixture in which they are present.
