Method of plugging a hydrocarbon well by a through-tubing technique are described. The method allows the tubing to be left in place. Only a short (<2 m) section is cut, milled, perforated, ruptured and expanded, or combinations thereof. A blocking device is sent downhole to block a bottom of the plug section, and bismuth alloy pellets dropped onto the blocking device. A heater is deployed to melt the bismuth alloy pellets. Next, the alloy liquid is allowed to cool and solidify. During solidification, the alloy expands and fills the section of well to be plugged or a portion thereof. Once primary and secondary barriers are in place, the well can be closed and the Christmas tree removed. A rock-to-rock plug can be set by removing or partially removing the tubular and outer casing, or just inner casing/tubulars can be removed if the exterior cement and casing are of sufficient quality.

Methods and systems for depth and radial orientation detection are provided. Methods for determining the depth or radial orientation of one or more downhole components include the steps of providing a target mass and a using a detection device for detecting the depth and/or orientation of the target mass. In some cases, the target mass is initially nonradioactive and then, after installing the target mass downhole, it may be irradiated to form a relatively short-lived radioactive target mass, which may then be detected with a radiation detector. In this way, the target mass acts as a depth or radial orientation marker. Where the target mass is situated downhole in a known radial relationship to another downhole component, the radial orientation of the other downhole component may be deduced once the radial orientation of the target mass is determined. Advantages include higher accuracies and reduced health, safety, and environmental risks.

Depth/orientation detection tool and methods thereof

A process for isolating one or more segments of a gravel packed well from other segments to treat the isolated segments and easily re-establish flow from the other segments after the treatment is described. The treatment includes techniques for enhancing or permanently blocking production from the isolated segment. The process includes the installation of a removable sealing element and a permeability poison that forms a fluid seal to prevent longitudinal fluid flow along the annular production space outside the tubular production pipe. With wireline or other low-cost wellbore workover systems, access is re-engaged with the secluded formation including removal of plugs and fluid seals within the tubular production pipe.

In-situ zonal isolation and treatment of wells

A process for utilizing microwaves to heat HO within a subterranean region wherein the heated HO contacts heavy oil in the subterranean region to lower the viscosity of the heavy oil and improve production of the heavy oil.

Process for enhanced production of heavy oil using microwaves

A method of producing heavy oil from a heavy oil formation with steam assisted gravity drainage. The method begins by drilling a borehole into a heavy oil formation comprising a steam barrier between a first pay zone and a second pay zone, wherein the steam barrier prevents a steam chamber to be formed between the first pay zone and the second pay zone. The steam barrier is then heated with a radio frequency. The steam barrier is then fractured to permit a steam chamber to be formed within the first pay zone and the second pay zone. Heavy oil is then produced from the heavy oil formation with steam assisted gravity drainage.

RF fracturing to improve SAGD performance

A process for sealing off one or more segments of a gravel packed well to reduce the production of undesirable fluids. The process includes the installation of a removable plug and the installation of a removable sealant at a location in the gravel packing to separate portions of the formation that produce desirable products from portions that produce less desirable products. A flow poison is then squeezed into the portion of the formation that produces less desirable products. With wireline or other low-cost wellbore workover systems, access is re-engaged with the preferred formation including removal of plugs and sealants without mechanical drilling. The process allows increased production of preferred fluids by preventing less or non preferred fluids from displacing the preferred fluids and also reduces lifting costs that would otherwise be expended for lifting and expenses related to separating and disposing of non preferred fluids.

In-situ zonal isolation for sand controlled wells

This invention relates to a downhole hydraulic pump for hydrocarbon wells that is installed and operated using coiled tubing. The downhole hydraulic pump is driven by a hydraulic power system positioned at the surface and connected through a closed loop system using multiple channels of the coiled tubing. The coiled tubing is formed of a combination of channels including strength component such as steel and having one channel that is at least lined with a non-metallic corrosion resistant surface where clean hydraulic fluid is carried from the hydraulic power system to the downhole hydraulic pump through the non-metallic corrosion resistant channel so to be less likely to pick up manufacturing and environmental particulates and corrosion by-products within the channel carrying the hydraulic fluid to the downhole hydraulic pump. The non-metallic corrosion resistant lined channel may comprise plastic pipe.

Multi-channel, combination coiled tubing strings for hydraulically driven downhole pump

An anti-surge/reverse thrusting tool for reducing the forces on a drill bit used in subterranean well drilling operations along with methods for drilling wells using a drill string employing the tool. The tool utilizes the pressure differential between drilling fluid flowing through the tool and the fluid located in the well bore annulus proximate the tool to reduce the likelihood of drill bit stall. The tool generally comprises an outer housing and a piston assembly that is axially shiftable relative to the housing.

Anti-surge/reverse thruster

A system (SPARC) for producing a mixed gas-oil stream wherein gas is to be separated and compressed downhole in a turbine-driven compressor before the gas is injected into a subterranean formation. A turbine bypass valve allows all of the stream to bypass the turbine during start-up until surging in the production stream has subsided. The valve then opens to allow a portion of the stream to pass through the turbine. Also, a compressor recycle valve recycles the compressor output until the surging in the stream has subsided while a check valve prevents back flow into the outlet of the compressor.

Oil and gas production with downhole separation and reinjection of gas

A downhole assembly for setting a well tool (e.g. packer) comprising a setting tool which has a draw rod made in two portions which are slidably connected to allow relative movement therebetween. The upper portion is releasably latched to the well tool wherein the weight of the well tool is effectively supported by the workstring rather than the draw rod during positioning of the assembly. Upon actuation of the setting tool, the upper portion is released from the well tool thereby allowing movement between the portions to switch the weight of the well tool to the draw rod during the setting of the well tool. By effectively unloading the draw rod during positioning of the assembly, the assembly can be retrieved if necessary without inadvertently setting the well tool or shearing the draw rod.

Downhole setting tool

Apparatus for insertion in a well which is producing fluids from multiple zones for measuring the concentration of water in the fluids flowing through the well to determine which zone may be producing excessive quantities of water. The apparatus transmits microwave frequency range radiation within a section of the wellbore. The apparatus may utilize a portion of the well casing and a conductor member which is centered in the wellbore by spaced apart centralizers to form a coaxial transmission line within the wellbore. The apparatus may be traversed through the wellbore on a wireline type cable for continuous measurement of the water content of the water-oil mixture flowing through the well to determine which zone is producing excessive amounts of water into the production fluids. A change in operating frequency of an oscillator furnishing the microwave range energy is compared with power loss through the apparatus to determine if a water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion is present in the wellbore fluid flow stream. Alternate embodiments of the apparatus include downhole transmitting and receiving antennas for directing an RF energy beam through the wellbore fluids. A volumetric flowmeter is connected to the apparatus for continuous measurement of fluid flow rate for comparison with the water concentration in the well fluids at various points in the wellbore.

System and method for measuring fluid properties by forming a coaxial

A coiled-tubing system having a reel onto which steel tubing is wound in layered coils. A layon roller comprised of a compliant material is maintained in physical contact with the tubing on the reel to prevent premature unwinding of the tubing during operation. The roller is moved towards and away from the tubing to maintain the roller in contact with the tubing as it is payed out and reeled onto the reel. The system includes a level wind mechanism having a means therein for adjusting the tension in the tubing as it passes through the level wind mechanism.

Perforations and other openings in well casings, liners and other conduits may be substantially blocked or sealed to prevent fluid flow between the casing or liner interior and an earth formation by placing a radially expansible sleeve adjacent the perforations or openings and urging the sleeve into forcible engagement with the casing or inner wall using an explosive charge. An apparatus including a radially contracted sleeve formed by a coiled plate member or a tubular member having flutes defined by external and internal folds, may be deployed into a well casing or liner through a production or injection tubing string and on the end of a flexible cable or coilable tubing. An explosive charge disposed on the apparatus and within the sleeve may be detonated to urge the sleeve into forcible engagement with the casing inner wall.
