Methods of making a modified pigment by reacting a first chemical group and a second chemical group to form a pigment having attached a third chemical group. The first chemical group includes at least one nucleophile and the second chemical group includes at least one electrophile, or vice versa. Resulting modified pigments, and ink compositions containing such pigments, are also described.

The invention provides a method of preparing hydrophobic silica particles comprising (a) providing an aqueous colloidal silica dispersion comprising about 5-70 wt. % of silica particles having an average overall particle size of about 10-1000 nm, wherein the silica particles comprise surface silanol groups, (b) combining the silica dispersion with about 3-75 &#x3bc;mole/m(based on the BET surface area of the silica) of a silyl amine treating agent and optionally with other ingredients to provide a reaction mixture, wherein the reaction mixture has a pH of about 7 or more, and comprises no more than about 50 wt. % of an organic solvent, and (c) drying the dispersion to provide hydrophobic silica particles. The invention further provides a method of preparing a toner composition comprising combining the hydrophobic silica particles as recited above with toner particles to provide a toner composition.

Method of preparing hydrophobic silica directly from an aqueous colloidal silica dispersion

The present invention relates to a process for preparing a polymer-modified pigment comprising the step of: combining, in any order, at least one pigment having attached at least one nucleophilic group, at least one polymer comprising at least one carboxylic acid group or salt thereof, and at least one coupling agent. At least one mediator compound may also be used. The modified pigments can be used in applications such as inkjet ink applications.

Process for preparing modified pigments

Capacitors, including supercapacitors, are described wherein the electrode contains at least one modified carbon product, wherein the modified carbon product is at least one carbon product having attached at least one organic group. The use of the modified carbon product in the electrodes for capacitors preferably leads to improved capacitance and/or lower internal resistance of the capacitor. Further, the use of modified carbon products in the electrodes for capacitors permits easier manufacturing steps for the production of capacitors.

Methods of making polymeric fibers are provided and include spinning a solution containing at least one polymer, a modified pigment having attached at least one organic group, and a solvent. The polarity of the solvent and the polarity of the modified pigment are selected such that the polymer is soluble in the solution and the modified pigment is maintained dispersed throughout the solution. The polarity of the modified pigment may be substantially the same as the polarity of the solvent. Fibers of acrylic-containing polymers and other polymeric fibers are also provided. Articles and reinforcing material containing the various fiber(s) are also described.

Polymeric fibers and spinning processes for making said polymeric fibers

Various modified carbon products are disclosed which can form a part of a polymeric product containing the modified carbon product and a polymer. One type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group. Another type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached a group having the formula: &mdash;Ar&mdash;CO &mdash;R or &mdash;C H CO &mdash;R where R is an organic group, monomeric group, or a polymeric group. The third type of modified carbon product contains a) a carbon product having attached at least one organic group directly attached to the carbon product, b) at least one ionic group, ionizable group, or a mixture thereof attached to the organic group, and c) at least one counter-ionic group or counter-ionizable group with at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group, or mixture thereof, where the counter-ionic or counter-ionizable group is attached to the ionic and/or ionizable group. A method of improving the dispersion of carbon products in polymers is also disclosed which involves dispersing the modified carbon products described above in a polymer to form a polymeric product.

Polymeric products containing modified carbon products and methods of making and using the same

Ink and coating compositions are disclosed comprising a silicon-treated carbon black. The silicon-treated carbon black may have at least one attached organic group, and the ink and coating compositions may comprise a combination of silicon-treated carbon black products, with and/or without at least one attached organic group, and untreated carbon black. Methods are disclosed for improving the jetness, improving the blue tone, improving the platewear, reducing the premix residue, modifying rheological properties, or improving waterfastness, of ink and coating compositions by incorporating therein silicon-treated carbon black.

Various modified carbon products are disclosed which can form a part of a polymeric product containing the modified carbon product and a polymer. One type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group. Another type of modified carbon product disclosed is a carbon product having attached a group having the formula: --Ar--CO.sub.2 --R or --(--C.sub.n H.sub.2n --)--CO.sub.2 --R, where R is an organic group, monomeric group, or a polymeric group. The third type of modified carbon product contains a) a carbon product having attached at least one organic group directly attached to the carbon product, b) at least one ionic group, ionizable group, or a mixture thereof attached to the organic group, and c) at least one counter-ionic group or counter-ionizable group with at least one organic group, monomeric group, or polymeric group, or mixture thereof, where the counter-ionic or counter-ionizable group is attached to the ionic and/or ionizable group. A method of improving the dispersion of carbon products in polymers is also disclosed which involves dispersing the modified carbon products described above in a polymer to form a polymeric product.

A modified carbon product is described which comprises carbon having attached at least one organic group wherein the organic group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) a group having the formula -AG-Sp-LG-Z, wherein AG is an activating group, Sp is a spacer group, LG is a leaving group, and Z is a counterion, and wherein the aromatic or the C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group is directly attached to the carbon, and wherein the organic group is present in any amount. The present invention also relates to ink and coating compositions comprising these modified carbon products.

A modified carbon product is described which comprises carbon having attached at least one organic group wherein the organic group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) a group having the formula --AG--Sp--LG--Z, wherein AG is an activating group, Sp is a spacer group, LG is a leaving group, and Z is a counterion, and wherein the aromatic or the C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group is directly attached to the carbon, and wherein the organic group is present in any amount. The present invention also relates to ink and coating compositions comprising these modified carbon products.

Modified carbon products with leaving groups and inks and coatings

A modified carbon product is described which comprises carbon having attached at least one organic group. The organic group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group. The aromatic group or the C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon and the organic group is present at a level of from about 0.10 to about 2.7 micromoles/m.sup.2 of the carbon used based on CTAB or t-area of the carbon or in an amount such that the modified carbon product has a residue value of more than about 5 wt %. Also described are aqueous and non-aqueous inks and coatings containing the modified carbon product. A method to increase the flow of an ink, as measured by glass plate flow, by incorporating the modified carbon product as part of the ink is also disclosed. Lastly, non-aqueous ink and coating formulations are described which contain an appropriate solvent and a modified carbon product comprising carbon having attached at least one organic group, wherein the organic group comprises a) at least one aromatic group or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein the organic group is present in any amount.
