An injection locked transmitter for an optical communication network includes a master seed laser source input substantially confined to a single longitudinal mode, an input data stream, and a laser injected modulator including at least one slave laser having a resonator frequency that is injection locked to a frequency of the single longitudinal mode of the master seed laser source. The laser injected modulator is configured to receive the master seed laser source input and the input data stream, and output a laser modulated data stream.

Communication systems and methods

A passive optical tap includes a first wavelength division multiplexer (WDM), a second WDM, a first optical splitter, and a second optical splitter. The first wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) has a first plurality of single-channel ports. The second WDM has a second plurality of single-channel ports. The first optical splitter has a first combined-power port optically coupled to a first one of the first plurality of single-channel ports and a first split-power port optically coupled to a first one of the second plurality of single-channel ports. The second optical splitter has a second combined-power port optically coupled to a second one of the second plurality of single-channel ports and a second split-power port optically coupled to a second one of the first plurality of single-channel ports.

Passive optical tap and associated methods

Grafting segments of a network together to mitigate service disruptions associated with impairments, maintenance, etc., is contemplated. The grafting may include instantiating a wired and/or wireless graft to facilitate connecting an impaired portion of a network to an unimpaired portion, such as to reestablish services at the impaired portion via the graft to the unimpaired portion.

A coherent passive optical network extender apparatus includes an extender transceiver for communication with an associated optical headend. The extender transceiver includes at least one receiving portion, at least one transmitting portion, and an extension processor. The apparatus further includes a signal adaptation unit configured to convert a downstream electrical transmission lane into a plurality of individual wavelengths. Each of the converted individual wavelengths are for transmission to one of an optical node and an end user. The apparatus further includes a plurality of transceivers, disposed within the signal adaptation unit, and configured to process and transmit the converted individual wavelengths as a bundle for retransmission to the respective end users.

System and methods for coherent optical extension

A full duplex communication network includes an optical transmitter end having a first coherent optics transceiver, an optical receiver end having a second coherent optics transceiver, and an optical transport medium operably coupling the first coherent optics transceiver to the second coherent optics transceiver. The first coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) transmit a downstream optical signal at a first wavelength, and (ii) simultaneously receive an upstream optical signal at a second wavelength. The second coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) receive the downstream optical signal, and (ii) simultaneously transmit the upstream optical signal. The first wavelength has a first center frequency separated from a second center frequency of the second wavelength.

Systems and methods for full duplex coherent optics

An integrated transceiver is provided for a coherent optical communication network. The integrated transceiver includes a first optical transceiver portion configured to receive and transmit coherent optical signals from and to the coherent optical communication network, respectively. The integrated transceiver further includes a second optical transceiver portion configured to receive and transmit non-coherent optical signals respectively from and to a non-coherent optical communication network. The integrated transceiver further includes an integrated media access control (MAC) processor disposed between the first and second optical transceiver portions. The integrated MAC processor is configured to (i) exchange cooperative scheduling information from the first optical transceiver portion to the second optical transceiver portion, and (ii) enable the first optical transceiver portion to schedule data traffic between the coherent and non-coherent optical communication networks using scheduling information obtained from a control plane of the second optical transceiver portion.

Systems and methods for coherent optical backhauling

A transmitter for an optical communication network includes a primary laser source input substantially confined to a single longitudinal mode, an input data stream, and a modulator including at least one secondary laser having a resonator frequency of the single longitudinal mode of the primary laser source. The modulator is configured to receive the primary laser source input and the input data stream, and output a laser modulated data stream.

Optical communication systems and methods

An optical network communication system utilizes a passive optical network including an optical hub having an optical line terminal, downstream transmitter, an upstream receiver, a processor, and a multiplexer. The upstream receiver includes a plurality of TWDMA upstream subreceivers. The system includes a power splitter for dividing a coherent optical signal from the optical hub into a plurality of downstream wavelength signals, a long fiber to carry the coherent optical signal between the optical hub and the power splitter, and a plurality of serving groups. Each serving group includes a plurality of optical network units configured to (i) receive at least one downstream wavelength signal, and (ii) transmit at least one upstream wavelength signal. The system includes a plurality of short fibers to carry the downstream and upstream wavelength signals between the power splitter and the optical network units, respectively. Each upstream subreceiver receives a respective upstream wavelength signal.

System and methods for coherent PON architecture and burst-mode reception

A coherent optical injection locking (COIL) apparatus generates multiple optical source outputs from a single optical source generated by a parent laser. The COIL apparatus includes a plurality of optical source generators each having a child laser, of lesser performance than the parent laser, that is injection locked to the single optical source. The optical source generators may have one or both of a shared configuration and a cascaded configuration that replicates the single optical source, or a single wavelength of the single optical source when it is a comb source.

Methods of injection locking for multiple optical source generation

A full duplex communication network includes an optical transmitter end having a first coherent optics transceiver, an optical receiver end having a second coherent optics transceiver, and an optical transport medium operably coupling the first coherent optics transceiver to the second coherent optics transceiver. The first coherent optics transceiver is configured to simultaneously transmit a downstream optical signal and receive an upstream optical signal. The second coherent optics transceiver is configured to simultaneously receive the downstream optical signal from the first coherent optics transceiver and transmit the upstream optical signal first coherent optics transceiver. At least one of the downstream optical signal and the upstream optical signal includes at least one coherent optical carrier and at least one non-coherent optical carrier.

A method for implementing an out-of-band communication channel in a coherent optical access network includes steps (a)-(e). Step (a) includes separating a MAC-layer signal received from a media access control (MAC) layer into an initial communication-channel signal and an initial data-channel signal. Step (b) includes encoding, using a first signal-coding scheme within a transceiver of a coherent passive optical network (PON), the initial communication-channel signal into a communication-channel signal occupying a first frequency band. Step (c) includes encoding, using a second signal-coding scheme within the transceiver, the initial data-channel signal into a data-channel signal occupying a second frequency band not overlapping the first frequency band. Step (d) includes combining the communication-channel signal and the data-channel signal to yield an analog signal. Step (e) includes driving, with the analog signal, an optical modulator to modulate a coherent optical signal for output on a fiber optical path of the coherent PON.

Optical line terminal with out-of-band communication channel, and method for implementing

An analog signal processor includes a sampling unit configured to (i) filter, in the frequency domain, a received time domain analog signal into a low-frequency end of a corresponding frequency spectrum, (ii) sample the filtered analog signal at a frequency substantially higher than the low-frequency end, and (iii) spread quantization noise over an expanded Nyquist zone of the corresponding frequency spectrum. The processor further includes a noise shaping unit configured to shape the spread quantization noise out of the low-frequency end of the corresponding frequency spectrum such that the filtered analog signal and the shaped quantization noise are substantially separated in the frequency domain, and a quantization unit configured to apply delta-sigma modulation to the filtered analog signal using at least one quantization bit, and output a digitized bit stream that substantially follows the amplitude of the received time domain analog signal.

System and methods for efficient digitization in a communication network

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user may select a cable modem (CM) at a graphical user interface (GUI) of a network device for testing. The network device may receive the indication of a selected query from GUI and transmit the selected query to the CM. The network device may receive a response message from the CM and compare the response message to an expected response message. The network device may generate a report indicating a status of the CM based on the comparing. The status of the CM may relate to a compliance of the CM to a standard. Additionally or alternatively, the status of the CM may indicate a performance level of the CM.
