Disclosed herein is a process for preparing an isomeric mixture comprising a major amount of a para-branched mono-alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound. The process involves the steps of: (a) providing an isomeric mixture comprising a major amount of a para-di(alkyl-substituted)aromatic compound; wherein a first alkyl substituent is a Cto Calkyl moiety and a second alkyl substituent is a Cto Cbranched alkyl moiety, wherein n is 0 to 42 and further wherein the second alkyl substituent is at least one carbon atom greater than the first alkyl substituent; (b) subjecting the isomeric mixture comprising a major amount of a para-di(alkyl-substituted)aromatic compound to oxidation conditions in the presence of an oxygen-containing source, thereby converting the first alkyl substituent which is a Cto Calkyl moiety to a hydroperoxide-containing substituted moiety to produce an isomeric mixture comprising a major amount of a para-branched alkyl-substituted, hydroperoxide-containing substituted aromatic compound; and (c) converting the hydroperoxide-containing substituted moiety to a hydroxyl moiety thereby providing an isomeric mixture comprising a major amount of a para-branched mono-alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound.

Process for preparing a para-linear alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound

Disclosed is a process for preparing a salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic composition having a reduced content of unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and its unsulfurized metal salt. The process involves at least the steps of: (a) providing a composition comprising (i) a salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound; (ii) an unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and (iii) an unsulfurized metal salt of the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound; wherein the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound is derived from alkylation of a hydroxyaromatic compound with one or more olefins comprising Cto Coligomers of monomers selected from propylene, butylene or mixtures thereof; and (b) extracting the unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and its unsulfurized metal salt from the composition of step (a) with one or more solvents capable of solubilizing the unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and its unsulfurized metal salt and under extraction conditions sufficient to provide a salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic composition having a reduced content of unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and its unsulfurized metal salt.

The present invention is directed to an isomerized alpha olefin sulfonate and a method of making the same wherein the isomerized alpha olefin sulfonate is derived from sulfonating an isomerized alpha olefin with sulfur trioxide in the presence of air thereby producing an isomerized alpha olefin sulfonic acid, wherein the isomerized alpha olefin is derived from the isomerization of C-Cnormal alpha olefins; and neutralizing the isomerized alpha olefin sulfonic acid with a source of an alkali metal or ammonium or substituted ammonium ion.

Isomerized alpha olefin sulfonate and method of making the same

Disclosed herein is a post-treated salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic composition which is a reaction product of (a) a salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic composition, wherein the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound is derived from alkylation of a hydroxyaromatic compound with one or more olefins comprising Cto Coligomers of monomers selected from propylene, butylene or mixtures thereof, (b) a source of an aldehyde and (c) a primary and/or secondary monoamine compound having at least one active hydrogen. A carboxylate detergent prepared by the process comprising (a) alkylating a hydroxyaromatic compound with at least one alpha olefin oligomer, derived from Cto Calpha olefins, to thereby produce an alkylhydroxyaromatic compound, and wherein at least 90% of the molecules in the alkylhydroxyaromatic compound have the alkyl group attached at the 4-position or higher from the terminus of the longest chain of the alkyl group, and further wherein the alkyl group comprises at least one hydrocarbon tail of at least 7 carbons; (b) neutralizing the resulting alkylated hydroxyaromatic compound with an alkali metal base; (c) carbonating the alkali metal salt from step (b) with carbon dioxide; (d) acidifying the salt produced in step (c); and (e) overbasing the resulting alkylated hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid.
