An exercise machine has a base with an upright frame. A carriage is movable along the length of the frame and connectable thereto by a pin which registers with apertures formed in the frame. The pin is connected to a bridge with spans between cheek plates of the carriage. A lever structure and a butterfly exercise structure are pivotally secured to the carriage. Resistance modules are connectable to the carriage and the lever structure and the butterfly exercise structure to resist movement. A bench is provided for the user and is connected at one end to one frame. A stepper exercise assembly is also attached to the frame. A stepper has hydraulic resistance cylinders which include springs to urge the treadles in an upward direction.

Aerobic and anaerobic exercise machine

An exercise system is comprised of an exercise machine, an external source of input signals, a control console and a display. The control console is associated with the exercise machine having an adjustment structure for a moveable member such as an endless belt on a powered treadmill or the pedals of an exercise cycle. Adjustment structures are connected to regulate the speed of the movable member as well as the resistance to movement. The control console has programs selectable and alterable from the external source at a remote location. A program supplies a variable input over selected time segments to regulate and control the adjustment structure such as the motor controller of the treadmill or a resistance strap associated with an inertia wheel of the exercise cycle. Input is received from a remote location over a telecommunications network such as from an external computer interconnected via a local computer network or via telephone lines to modify, to select or to supply the exercise programs of the control console for operation of the related exercise machine.

Treadmill base

The speed of operating structure of an exercise machine is sensed by a sheave and belt drive and rotates a worm gear interconnected to a reduction gear assembly to rotate a driver at a preselected rate. The driver is interconnected to drive a cam surface upon which a cam follower rides to in turn operate a pivoted lever. The lever is interconnected to transmit the movement of the cam follower to operate the resistance means of the exercise machine to increase or decrease the resistance being applied to the operating structure of the exercise machine.

Direct drive controlled program system

A resistance assembly useful to provide resistance to exercise movements performed by a user on an exercise machine includes a pair of spool-like ends disposed within a resilient loop which passes around a portion of each spool end. Each spool end is configured as a hollow open-ended cylinder with planar, annular flanges extending from both ends of the cylinder. A shield extends from a segment of one of the annular flanges of each spool end. Each spool end is composed of first and second interfitting spool parts, each comprising a hollow open-ended cylinder with one of two flanges extending therefrom. The resistance of the assembly can be varied by exchanging the resilient loop for any of a plurality of loops having different resistive properties.

A control system includes an adjustment knob to regulate the resistance of the exercise machine such as a treadmill, rowing machine, or stationary exercise cycle. Various indicia are positioned proximate the knob so the user may specifically select an exercise program and real time feedback of exercise performance through the use an ear clip supplying pulse information or other biological data which is converted and displayed for observation by the user.

A reciprocator for use with a stepper-type exercise machine has a channel as a rocker element. The channel has left and right ends which rotate about a pivot axis below the pedals. Rollers are mounted at each end of the channel. The rollers have a groove to engage with arcuate roller engagement structures attached to the underside of each pedal. The rollers are each mounted on a mount bar which spans the opening of the channel at the left and right ends. A pair of springs are positioned at each end to urge the roller away from the sides of the channel.
