A method for power quality protection includes measurement of electrical and nonelectrical parameters, calculation of additional electrical and nonelectrical parameters, comparison of the value of the calculated parameters with maximum allowed values from a power quality perspective, activation of protection mechanisms for transitioning to a safe mode or for isolation from the bus. The systems and methods may prevent equipment failures when out of the spec power quality is present in the distribution bus and may protect the distribution bus from imposing power quality problems due to equipment failures. Because most of the sensors in the systems of the present invention are already used for other control and protection purposes, there may be no reliability degradation. Most of the calculations and the control logic may be performed digitally for improved reliability and flexibility to modify algorithms.

Method and system for power quality protection

A 24-pulse composite AC-to-DC converter is a converter using two or more conversion methods in parallel. The converter may include a main rectifier receiving at least a portion of an input AC signal, an autotransformer having an output voltage with lower amplitude than the input AC signal, and a plurality of auxiliary bridge rectifiers, each receiving the output from each leg of the autotransformer. In one embodiment of the invention, the main rectifier may receive a substantial portion of the load current, allowing each of the auxiliary bridge rectifiers to be generally smaller than the main rectifier.

A drive system for a multi-phase electric machine with a permanent magnet rotor, the drive system may comprise conduction paths for each phase. Detectors on each of the conduction paths may determine electrical condition of the conduction path. At least one selectable interconnection path may be present between all of the conduction paths and at least one selectable interconnection path may be operable to connect all of the conduction paths together responsively to at least one of the detectors determining that the electrical condition of its respective electrical path is representative of a predetermined electrical fault condition so that heating of the rotor during continued rotation of the rotor is prevented.

Method for mitigating negative sequence effect resulting from non-symmetrical short circuit failure of synchronous electric machine based systems

A multiple-winding induction machine may be used to obtain a reduced-speed-variation electric drive when using a variable-frequency power distribution system. Each winding may have a different number of poles. The winding with the smallest number of poles may operate the machine at the lowest bus frequency, while the winding with the largest number of poles may operate the machine at the highest bus frequency. In one embodiment, a third winding, with a middle number of poles, may operate the machine at the middle frequency ranges. The speed of the induction machine is a function of the electrical frequency and the number of the winding poles. Therefore, the operating speed range can be reduced by switching from one winding to another. According to the present invention, windings with different numbers of poles can be designed to achieve different reductions in speed variation.

Variable frequency reduced speed variation electric drive

Overspeed protection of sensorless electric drives is needed in the aerospace industry. Methods for overspeed protection may include software implementations, hardware implementations or combinations thereof. Typical high-speed rotating machinery is designed to sustain overspeed operation of up to 50% beyond maximum normal operation. This requirement leads to substantial penalties in weight and volume. The methods of the present invention may allow for an opportunity to reduce this overspeed design to about 5 to 15%, typically about 7%.

Overspeed protection for sensorless electric drives

The present invention provides systems and methods that allow for individual power sources to be disconnected and reconnected without interrupting the power supply from the other power sources and that allow for these power sources to provide power at substantially the same electrical parameters such as frequency, phase, and voltage.

Robust power distribution systems and methods

A multi-unit power generation system comprising a plurality of generators connected in parallel, a switching system for switching between and/or aggregating a generator load produced by the plurality of generators and a utility grid load, and a control system. The control system is in communication with each generator for communicating command signals to each generator. The control system is further in communication with the switching system for commanding the switching system to switch between or aggregate the generator load and the utility grid load. Each generator may comprise, for example, a microturbine generator.

Multi-unit power generation system for stand-alone and grid connected operation

A method of supplying supplemental power from a supplemental power source in addition to that from a primary power source in order to meet power demand of a load, comprising: measuring power flow from the primary power source to the power load; developing an error signal by subtracting a fixed power offset from the actual primary power source power measurement; establishing a gain; creating an input by multiplying the error signal by the gain; creating a supplemental power source power adjustment command based upon the input; and adjusting the power output of the supplemental power source based on the supplemental power source power adjustment command.
