An optical recording element having a transparent substrate and on the surface of said substrate, a recording layer, a light reflecting layer is disclosed. The recording layer comprises (i) a metallized azo ether dye having an azo group linking a substituted 3-hydroxypyridine nucleus to a phenyl nucleus wherein the phenyl nucleus has an ether substituent ortho to the azo group and said phenyl nucleus is free of strong electron withdrawing groups and (ii) a cyanine dye. The recording layer also has, when unrecorded a refractive index, at a selected wavelength from 400 to 660 nm, comprising a real part (n) greater than 1.8 and an imaginary part (k) less than 0.2.

Optical recording elements containing mixture of metallized azo ether and cyanine dyes

Metallized azo thioether dyes having an azo group linking a substituted 3-hydroxypyridine nucleus to a phenyl nucleus are disclosed. The phenyl nucleus has an thioether substituent ortho to the azo group but does not have electron withdrawing substituents on the phenyl nucleus. The dyes are useful in optical recording elements.

The present invention discloses optical recording elements having optical recording layers containing tetra dyes. The dyes have metallized azo dianionic dye with cationic dye counterions. The recording layer has a thickness from 225 to 300 nm.

An ink jet printing process for improving the wet abrasion resistance of an ink jet image comprising: providing an ink jet recording element comprising a support having thereon an image-recording layer comprising a cross-linkable polymer of gelatin or acetoacetylated poly(vinyl alcohol) and a mordant; applying liquid ink droplets of a cationic, water-soluble dye on the image-recording layer in an image-wise manner; and applying an aqueous solution of an organic hardener or a sulfate of a trivalent metal to the image to cross-link the polymer.

Metallized azo ether dyes having an azo group linking a substituted 3-hydroxypyridine nucleus to a phenyl nucleus are disclosed. The phenyl nucleus has an ether substituent ortho to the azo group. The phenyl nucleus is free of strong electron withdrawing substituents. The dyes are useful in optical recording elements.

An ink jet printing process for improving the light stability of an ink jet image comprising: providing an ink jet recording element comprising a support having thereon an image-recording layer comprising a cross-linkable polymer of gelatin or acetoacetylated poly(vinyl alcohol) and a mordant; applying liquid ink droplets of a dye on the image-recording layer in an image-wise manner, the dye being a water-soluble deprotonated cationic dye which is capable of being reprotonated to a cationic dye having a N&mdash;H group which is part of a conjugated system; and applying an aqueous solution of a multivalent inorganic salt to the image to cross-link the polymer.

A metallized azo-ether dye comprising an azo group linking a substituted 3-hydroxy-pyridine nucleus to a phenyl nucleus wherein the phenyl nucleus has an alkoxy or thioether substituent at its 2-position. The dye is useful in the recording layers of optical recording elements.
