A service provider network includes a database that has one or more 'base' machine images and, for one or more of the base machine images, one or more predetermined 'optimized' machine images. Each base and optimized machine image are stored in the database and selected based on certain user inputs to create a customer-desired virtual machine instance on a host computer. An optimized machine image is a version of a particular base machine image to which one or more optimizations have been applied. The database may contain complete optimized machine images or data bits that, when applied to a base machine image, result in the optimized machine image.

Machine image launch system

A network-based discovery system and service are disclosed that provide client discovery services to a number of clients over a network. The network-based discovery system includes a database that stores discovery information of client network-based resource configurations. The discovery information may be obtained from client resources by client-side discovery components that are placed on client resources, obtain the discovery information and that send the information to the discovery system. The discovery system analyzes the discovery information to determine the client network-based resource configurations and generates client network-based resource configuration representations for the respective clients. The client network-based resource configuration representation may include a description of, and dependencies among, a plurality of computer-based resources. The discovery service may operate across a client network that spans both of a client's enterprise data networks as well as resources that are operated on behalf of the same client by a service provider network.

Network-based resource configuration discovery service

Techniques for providing a managed time service are described. A control plane of the managed time service can receive data indicating one or more network time protocol (NTP) hosts are active. The control plane can update a zonal domain name system (DNS) to include the one or more NTP hosts. The at least one compute resource accesses the one or more NTP hosts using the zonal DNS, and the one or more NTP hosts provide time data to the at least one compute resource. The control plane can receive performance data from the one or more NTP hosts and automatically scale the one or more NTP hosts based on the performance data.

Managed time service for compute resources

At a configuration discovery service, a unique service-side identifier is generated for a configuration item based on analysis of a data set obtained from a first data source. A determination is made that a second data set, which does not contain the service-side identifier and is obtained from a different data source, also includes information pertaining to the same configuration item. A coalesced configuration record for the configuration item is prepared. The coalesced configuration record is stored at a repository and used to respond to a programmatic query.

Intelligent configuration discovery techniques

Various systems, processes, and techniques may be used to allocate computer resources. In particular implementations, systems and processes for allocation of computer resources may include the ability to determine whether a request for allocation of computer resources has been received and determine a set of server computers able to fulfill requirements of the request. The systems and processes may also include the ability to identify one or more server computers in the set likely to successfully provide the computer resources and allocate the requested computer resources on an identified server computer.
