Systems and methods for energy management of hybrid electrical systems are discussed herein. In certain embodiments, a system includes one or more generators configured to provide generator electric power. The system also includes one or more batteries configured to provide stored electric power. Further, the system includes one or more generator controllers using a state of charge for the one or more batteries, wherein the one or more generator controllers control a combination of the generator electric power and the stored electric power provided to one or more loads according to a plurality of modes, wherein multiple modes of the plurality of modes are based on one or more parameters of the one or more batteries.

Energy management of hybrid electrical systems

A cooling sleeve for an electric machine is provided. The cooling sleeve includes: a cylindrical body having an exterior surface, a first channel formed in the cylindrical body and having a first inlet for receiving a cooling fluid, and a second channel formed in the cylindrical body and having a second inlet for receiving the cooling fluid. The first inlet and the second inlet are formed on the exterior surface at a center along a length of the cylindrical body. A plurality of turbulators are formed in the first channel and the second channel and a cylindrical cover is configured to be disposed over the cylindrical body.

Cooling a high-power electric machine

A system for an electric machine associated with a gas turbine engine of a vehicle includes a shield to be coupled to the electric machine. The shield includes a first wall opposite a second wall with a passage defined between the first wall and the second wall. The first wall defines an inlet port at a first end opposite an outlet port defined between the first wall and the second wall at a second end. The inlet port and the outlet port are in communication with the passage. The system includes an airfoil coupled to the shield proximate the second end to extend from the shield. The airfoil defines an airfoil inlet at a leading edge that is in communication with an interior of the airfoil. The interior of the airfoil is in communication with the inlet port and is to couple the electric machine to the gas turbine engine.

In one embodiment, a stator coil that includes a first turn with two or more strands is provided. The first turn includes first and second opposite sides, a coil termination at a first end of the first turn and an inversion region disposed at a second end, opposite the coil termination. The stator coil also includes at least one additional turn with two or more strands. The at least one additional turn includes first and second opposite sides, and an inversion region located adjacent to the inversion region of the first turn. The first and second sides of the first turn are inverted relative to the first and second sides of the at least one additional turn outside their respective inversion regions.

Stator coil for high power density and efficiency electric machines

Systems and methods for voltage regulation of high voltage direct current systems are provided. In certain embodiments, a system includes a generator that generates alternating current (AC) voltage. The system further includes a power converter that converts the AC voltage into regulated direct current (DC) voltage. Also, the system includes a voltage regulator. In additional embodiments, the voltage regulator includes an AC voltage regulator that regulates the AC voltage generated by the generator. Also, the voltage regulator includes a DC voltage regulator that regulates the DC voltage produced by the power converter. Moreover, the voltage regulator includes a regulator selector that selectively activates one of the AC voltage regulator and the DC voltage regulator based on a current from the power converter and at least one of a voltage of the generator and a voltage of the power converter.

Voltage regulation of high voltage direct current systems

Techniques for achieving a variety of selected direct current (DC) voltage outputs are disclosed. In one embodiment, a power generation system includes at least one multi-phase generator configured to generate an alternating current (AC) voltage. A plurality of diode rectifier circuits is coupled to the at least one multi-phase generator, which are configured to receive the AC voltage and convert the AC voltage to a DC voltage output. The power generation system includes configuration circuitry coupled to the plurality of diode rectifier circuits configured to configure the diode rectifier circuits in multiple configurations. For example, the configuration circuitry can configure the diode rectifier circuits in a series configuration to achieve a first DC voltage level, a parallel configuration to achieve a second DC voltage level, or a mixed series-parallel configuration to achieve a third DC voltage level.

Generator system for multiple high voltage direct current applications

Techniques for achieving a constant narrow range DC voltage are disclosed. In an embodiment, a system comprises at least one variable speed, multi-phased generator configured to generate an alternating current (AC) voltage. A plurality of diode rectifier circuits is coupled to the at least one multi-phased generator. The plurality of diode rectifier circuits are configured to convert the AC voltage to a direct current (DC) voltage. A plurality of high-power DC contactors is connected to the plurality of diode rectifier circuits. The plurality of high-power DC contactors is configured to configure outputs of the plurality of diode rectifier circuits in one of a parallel, series, and/or mixed parallel and series configuration. A controller coupled to the plurality of diode rectifier circuits and is configured to reconfigure the plurality of high-power DC contactors based on a control parameter of the at least one multi-phased generator.

Power generation system for wide speed range applications

A retention component for retaining a coil in a slot of a stator for a generator having a rotor includes a first segment and a second segment, both of which are configured to be inserted into the slot. At least one of the first and second segments is made entirely of laminated sheets that together form a unitary structure of magnetic material. At least one of the first and second segments has an interfacing surface configured to directly interface a rotor surface in the absence of a structure therebetween. A channel is between the first and second segments, and a third segment that extends along and within the channel. The third segment is less magnetic or non-magnetic than at least one of the first and second elements.

Method and apparatus to reduce losses in a compact high speed generator

A propulsion and electric power generation system includes a gas turbine propulsion engine, an electrical generator, an aircraft power distribution system, a plurality of auxiliary fans, and a controller. The gas turbine propulsion engine includes at least a low-pressure turbine coupled to a fan via a low-pressure spool, and the low-pressure turbine is configured to generate mechanical power. The electrical generator is directly connected to the low-pressure spool and generates a total amount of electrical power (Pe). The aircraft power distribution system receives a first fraction (Pa) of the total amount of electrical power. The auxiliary fans receive a second fraction (Pf) of the total amount of electrical power. The controller is configured to control a ratio of Pf to Pa (Pf/Pa) such that the ratio spans a range from less than 0.6 to at least 0.9.

Distributed propulsion and electric power generation system

A hybrid electric aircraft propulsion system at least includes a motor with induction effect to drive a propeller or propulsion fan. The motor is directly supplied from the electrical output of a generator. The generator is driven by a variable speed engine and as such the generator has a output frequency proportional to the speed of the engine. A controller is operatively coupled to the motor, the generator and the engine. The controller is operable to control a speed of the engine and the excitation of the generator to provide an output at a target voltage and frequency to drive the motor at a desired torque and speed.

Hybrid electric aircraft propulsion system with motors using induction effect

A method for generating electrical power may include the steps of rotating a rotor of a generator at a speed in excess of about 12,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) to about 25,000 rpm and producing power with the generator at a rate in excess of about 800 kilowatts (kW). The generator has a power/weight ratio no smaller than about 3 kW/lbs. A rotor is cooled with cooling oil internally circulated through the rotor of the generator so that contact of cooling oil with external surfaces of the rotor may be precluded. The stator is also cooled with oil that is prevented from contacting the external surfaces of the rotor. Pressurized airflow may be produced in a gap between the rotor and a stator of the generator to preclude entry of cooling oil into the gap.
