A method to provide flexibility on the configuration and operation of the modulator, demodulator, and modem, where purpose-built (legacy) devices are not traditionally capable of exposing a level of control and flexibly for a user or an autonomous program for optimizing performance. Providing user or programmatic control of algorithms is traditionally not possible for purpose-built modems. Parameters such as the number of decoder iterations that are performed on Forward Error Correction (FEC), Interference Mitigation algorithm, or dynamic adjustment loop bandwidth to combat phase noise can be adjusted autonomously to optimize receiver performance. The all software modem, supported by a High-Performance Computing (HPC) architecture, removes the limitation due to the flexibility of programming resources and available performance. Unlike most purpose-built hardware, the HPC allows processing resources to dynamically be reallocated, so that as additional performance is desired, the resources may be increased and decreased as required.

An incoming flow of data from a source is received at an input parser. The incoming flow of data is divided into a plurality of packets by the input parser. The plurality of the packets is encoded with a FEC and transmitted over a network with a plurality of transmission links. The transmitted plurality of FEC encoded packets are decoded. The decoded plurality of packets is merged to an outgoing flow of data with an output multiplexor and the outgoing flow of data is sent to a destination.

A burst processing modem. Implementations may include a receive side including a channelizer adapted to process a plurality of channels and write a plurality of frames to a receive RAM array. A receive frame state machine may be adapted to generate a timing signal using a burst time plan for the plurality of frames. A demodulator may be coupled with the receive RAM array and adapted to read from the receive RAM array only the one or more bursts from the plurality of frames indicated by the timing signal. A transmit side may include a modulator coupled with a transmit frame state machine, with a transmit RAM array, and a combiner bank. The combiner bank may read the modulated plurality of channels from the transmit RAM array and assemble a plurality of frames using a timing signal generated from a burst time plan by the transmit frame state machine.
