The present invention is directed to a biocidal composition comprising a blend of one or more pyrithione compounds, and one or more pyrrole compounds of Formula I wherein said biocidal composition is copper free or low copper content.

A biocidal composition is disclosed comprising composite particles, each of said composite particles containing a shell and a core, said core comprising a metal or a metal-containing compound wherein the metal is a moiety selected from the group consisting of zinc, copper, bismuth, silver, zirconium, and combinations thereof said shell comprising a pyrithione adduct comprising the reaction product of pyrithione with a portion of said core metal or metal compound. In one aspect, an anti-fouling composition is disclosed comprising (a) an anti-soft-fouling effective amount of copper pyrithione; and (b) an anti-hard-fouling effective amount of a copper-containing salt, or oxide or hydroxide thereof. The present invention also relates to a method of making an anti-fouling composition comprising particles of copper pyrithione and a copper-containing salt that is effective against hard-fouling and soft-fouling organisms.

A biocidal composition is disclosed comprising composite particles, each of the composite particles containing a shell and a core, the core comprising a metal or a metal-containing compound wherein the metal is a moiety selected from the group consisting of zinc, copper, bismuth, silver, zirconium, and combinations thereof, the shell comprising a pyrithione adduct comprising the reaction product of pyrithione with a portion of the core metal or metal compound. In one aspect, an anti-fouling composition is disclosed comprising (a) an anti-soft-fouling effective amount of copper pyrithione; and (b) an anti-hard-fouling effective amount of a copper-containing salt, or oxide or hydroxide thereof. Disclosed herein is a composition comprising a non-dusting copper pyrithione dispersion comprising small solid particles of copper pyrithione dispersed in a liquid dispersant, said solid particles having a particle size within a range of from about 0.1 to about 10 microns and a median particle size of from 0.2 to less than 0.5 microns. The dispersion is suitably employed as an antifouling additive for marine paints without risking worker exposure to copper pyrithione dust. Paints containing the small particle copper pyrithione exhibit improved antifouling performance in cold water, as compared to paint containing larger particle copper pyrithione.

The present invention describes a composition for stabilizing a paint or paint base composition against viscosity change, gelation and agglomeration during formulation and storage. Illustratively, an antifouling paint or paint base composition is disclosed that contains a hydrolysable acrylate resin such as copper acrylate, zinc acrylate, or silyl acrylate, a metal salt of pyrithione, cuprous oxide, and a primary stabilizing agent selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, hydroxypyridine, metal salts of benzoic acid, and hydroxypyridine, with the proviso that said composition is essentially free of 2-hydroxypyridine N-oxide, and is also essentially free of the sodium, zinc and copper salts of 2-hydroxypyridine-N-oxide.

Stable antifouling paint composition containing metal salt of pyrithione and cuprous oxide

Disclosed herein is a composition comprising a non-dusting copper pyrithione dispersion comprising small solid particles of copper pyrithione dispersed in a liquid dispersant, said solid particles having a particle size within a range of from about 0.1 to about 10 microns and a median particle size of less than 3 microns. Disclosed is a process for inhibiting the formation of discoloration in an aqueous composition selected from the group consisting of water-based paint, adhesive, caulk and sealant compositions, and combinations thereof, wherein said discoloration is caused by the presence of ferric ion or cupric ion together with pyrithione in said composition. The process comprises contacting the composition with a discoloration-inhibiting amount of a zinc compound selected from the group consisting of zinc salts of organic acids, zinc salts of inorganic acids, zinc hydroxide, zinc oxide, and combinations thereof. Also disclosed is an aqueous antimicrobial composition protected against discoloration attributable to the presence of ferric ion or cupric ion therein.

The present invention relates, in one aspect, to a process for preparing a storage-stable dispersion of a biocide which comprises the steps of: (a) mixing a plastisol, comprising a resin and a carrier, and a biocide to provide a mixture of said plastisol and said biocide (b) heating said mixture of plastisol and biocide to an elevated temperature of between about 30.degree. C. and about 100.degree. C. to provide a homogeneous, storage stable dispersion, said dispersion containing said biocide in an amount of between about one and about 30 weight percent based upon the weight of said dispersion, said resin being present in an amount of between about 5 and about 75 weight percent based upon the weight of said dispersion, with the proviso that when the weight percent of said resin in said dispersion is between about 30% and about 75%, then said elevated temperature is between 30.degree. C. and 45.degree. C., and when the weight percent of said resin in said dispersion is between about 5% and about 29%, then said elevated temperature is between 46.degree. C. and 100.degree. C., and (c) cooling the dispersion to a temperature of between about -20.degree. C. and about 40.degree. C. to provide a storage-stable mixture having a viscosity of between about 2,000 and about 30,000 centipoise.
