A shaped thermal filler particle has an elongate shape defined by a substantially planar first smooth surface and a second smooth surface that contacts the substantially planar first smooth surface along a planar closed path. The planar closed path has a length to width ratio of at least 1.5. The shaped thermal filler particle has a maximum linear dimension normal to the planar first smooth surface that is less than or equal to one half of the length of the closed path. A thermally conductive composition comprises from 1 to 95 percent by volume of the shaped thermal filler particles dispersed in a binder. An assembly comprises a heat source, a heat sink, and the thermally conductive composition at least partially sandwiched between the heat source and the heat sink.

A waveguide for receiving an incident electromagnetic wave (EMW) having an operating frequency &#x393; includes an array of spaced apart unit cells arranged along the waveguide. Each of a plurality of the unit cells in the array of spaced apart unit cells has a first transmission parameter S21 having a lowest resonant frequency &#x393;1 and includes a dielectric body and one or more electrically conductive layers disposed on and partially covering the dielectric body. At least some aspects of the present disclosure feature a communication device for propagating an electromagnetic wave around a blocking structure. The communication device includes a passive coupling device to capture the electromagnetic wave, and a waveguide electromagnetically coupled to the coupling device. The waveguide is disposed around the blocking structure. The waveguide has a resonance frequency matched with the coupling device. The waveguide is configured to propagate the electromagnetic wave captured by the coupling device.
