A method is disclosed for controlling overall transmission ratios in a vehicle powertrain with an engine, fixed multiple-ratio gearing and infinitely variable ratio components. For a given vehicle speed and for a given vehicle traction wheel horsepower, the fixed multiple-ratio gearing and the infinitely variable ratio components are controlled to operate with an overall ratio that will permit the engine to operate with optimum efficiency.

Method for controlling a vehicle powertrain having step ratio gearing and a continuously variable transmission to achieve optimum engine fuel economy

A method is disclosed for controlling engine braking horsepower for a power transmission mechanism in a vehicle powertrain. The transmission mechanism has multiple-ratio gearing and a continuously variable transmission unit arranged in parallel disposition. A target engine speed during an engine braking mode is maintained by controlling the ratio of the continuously variable transmission unit.

Method for controlling engine braking in a vehicle powertrain

A method of controlling the ratio of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is controlled by a CVT controller is provided. The method includes determining the torque produced by an engine, calculating an acceleration limit value based upon the torque value and the engine inertia value and a calibrated acceleration limiting ratio. The acceleration limit value is compared to the desired engine speed value to determine a command engine speed value. The CVT ratio is then calculated by dividing the command engine speed value by a measured vehicle speed value. The calculated CVT ratio is compared to a measured CVT ratio and a control signal is sent to an actuator of a CVT. Torque provided to the engine to overcome the engine inertia is limited by the method so that the step change in torque provided to the vehicle wheels, as the engine approaches the command engine speed value, is reduced.

Method and apparatus for controlling a continuously variable transmission

A method for controlling a centrifugal clutch in a heavy-duty vehicle powertrain uses an engine torque request for a controller including a vehicle engine controller. A clutch controller develops an engine speed request based upon driver input. The engine speed request is converted to the engine torque request to effect smooth vehicle launch engagement of the clutch.

A vehicular powertrain system includes a prime mover having an output, a multi-ratio transmission having an input, and a torque reduction coupling system coupling the prime mover output and the multi-ratio transmission input. The exemplary torque reduction coupling system includes a clutch and a planetary gear set selectively coupling the prime mover output to the multi-ratio transmission input. The exemplary planetary gear set includes one components of the planetary gear set being selectively coupled to the clutch.

Driveline torque reducer

A method for estimating deceleration of a wheeled vehicle during a transmission gear shift. A first input signal indicative of an engine torque and a second signal indicative of an input shaft rotational speed are used to predict the expected vehicle deceleration during a transmission ratio shift to a target gear ratio. An expected vehicle deceleration value is outputted to a shift decision control unit for implementing a transmission gear shift.
