An optical communications circuit has a communications light signal source and a heat pump coupled to cool the signal source. A controller monitors a current and a temperature of the signal source, and regulates the temperature. The controller updates a heat pump control limit parameter for the heat pump, based on the monitored current. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Optical communications circuit current management

An optical to electrical converter is to receive an incoming optical data communications signal. A binary to ternary encoder has an input coupled to an output of the converter. A ternary to binary decoder has first and second limiting amplifiers, each having a pair of complementary inputs. One of the inputs of each pair is coupled to a first adjustable threshold circuit and the other is coupled to an output of the encoder. A logical summing circuit has a pair of inputs coupled to outputs of the first and second limiting amplifiers, respectively. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Optical receiver with electric ternary coding

An optoelectronic circuit has an optical to electrical converter, a duo-binary encoder with an input coupled to an output of the converter, and a duo-binary decoder having an input coupled to the output of the encoder. A decision circuit having an input coupled to an output of the decoder is also provided. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

According to embodiments of the present invention, an optical transponder and/or optical transceiver includes a decision circuit, which scales a decision threshold voltage based on power in a received optical signal. In one embodiment, the decision set point may be established based on an expected amplitude or power of an incoming optical signal and the transponder and/or transceiver uses the actual power of the incoming optical signal to adjust the decision threshold voltage.

An apparatus for optical receiver circuit protection includes a bias source, a bias monitor, and a comparator. The bias source is to provide a bias voltage to an optical receiver. The bias monitor is coupled to measure a current through the optical receiver, where the current changes responsive to received optical energy. A comparator is coupled to the bias monitor, where the comparator has a first state if the current is less than a threshold current level and where the comparator has a second state if the current is greater than the threshold current level. The bias source is coupled to be enabled responsive to the comparator switching to the first state and disabled responsive to the comparator switching to the second state.

Optical receiver protection circuit

In one embodiment, an apparatus for a high data-rate optical modulator bias circuit is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an optical modulator, a voltage-controlled voltage source to translate a control voltage into a voltage referenced to a voltage supply to the optical modulator, a buffer amplifier with high current sinking capability to supply a bias voltage to the optical modulator, and a bias-T to couple the bias voltage to a data port of the optical modulator. Other embodiments are also described.

High data-rate optical modulator bias circuit

An apparatus comprising a control system coupled to an optical modulator. The control system including an Radio Frequency (RF)/dither ratio unit coupled to the optical modulator, wherein the RF/dither ratio unit to modify an amplitude of a dither signal inputted into the optical modulator to maintain a constant ratio between the amplitude of the dither signal and an amplitude of an RF input signal inputted into the optical modulator.

Optical modulator control system

Described herein is a hermetic fiber optic package that may have a wide bandwidth radio frequency (e.g., between 9 kHz and 300 GHz) interface and a multilayer substrate provides a platform to integrated various components such as, for example, integrated circuits having electronic components, optoelectronic components, or optics. In one embodiment, the substrate has a wide bandwidth surface mountable interface that may be a single ended or a differential that allows for an electrical signal to pass from the exterior of the package to the interior. The interior of the package contains a 'riser' that is used to bring an electrical signal from the plane of the substrate to the plane close to the optical axis. This riser includes a transmission line to achieve the change in height. The transmission line can be single ended or differential. Also within the package is a 'submount' upon which electrical/optical/electro-optic components can be integrated.

In a system for modulating an RF carrier, the RF carrier is fed through a lowpass filter and phase shifted approximately &#x2212;90 degrees. The RF carrier is also fed through a high pass filter and phase shifted approximately +90 degrees. A switch connected to the output of the lowpass filter and connected to the output of the highpass filter, selects and outputs either the &#x2212;90 degree phase shifted carrier output from the lowpass filter or the +90 degree phase shifted carrier output from the highpass filter depending on a switching state determined by data bit information received at a data port to produce a BPSK modulated RF carrier. Two such BPSK modulators may be combined using lowpass and highpass filters to form a QPSK modulator. Two such QPSK modulators may be combined with an attenuator to form a QAM modulator.

High speed monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulators

A differential phase shift keyed demodulator system uses a Michelson interferometer configuration in which polarization maintenance is accomplished by using a single 50:50 coupler coupled to a first Faraday rotator mirror and a second Faraday rotator mirror through a first fiber and a second fiber, respectively. In this way, system passively eliminates the polarization problem caused by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Differential phase shift keyed demodulator system

A direct-drive modulator driver and an optical transponder including the driver are disclosed. The driver includes a transistor having a first terminal, a second terminal and an input terminal, where said first terminal is grounded. The driver further comprises of a laser diode having a p-terminal and an n-terminal, where said p-terminal is coupled to a power supply, and said n-terminal is coupled to the second terminal of the transistor. The driver further comprises of an input load coupled to the input terminal of the transistor.
