A heat transfer system includes first () and second () electrocaloric module with aligned first and second sides. First and second prime movers () are arranged to direct a working fluid in opposite directions along flow paths through the electrocaloric modules. A rotary fluid control device () including a plurality of openings () is disposed around the electrocaloric modules, and is configured to rotate between positions relative to the modules. In a first position, the first module is in operative fluid communication through the openings with the first prime mover, and the second module is in operative fluid communication through the openings with the second prime mover. In a second position, the first module is in operative fluid communication through the openings with the second prime mover, and the second module is in operative fluid communication through the openings with the first prime mover.

Electrocaloric heat transfer articles and systems

A method for controlling power consumption includes receiving a flexibility request from an electrical utility and discovering energy relevant devices in a building. The energy relevant devices include electrical loads and alternative energy sources. Power requirements are predicted from an electrical utility for the loads, the prediction takes into account available power from the alternative power sources. Power set points are determined for the energy relevant devices based on the prediction. The power set points meet the flexibility request. The energy relevant devices are directed to operate at the power set points. A building energy management system is also disclosed.

Method for supervisory control of building power consumption

A method of making an electrocaloric article is disclosed. The method includes mounting a supported electrocaloric film to a frame. The supported electrocaloric film includes an electrocaloric film and a first support film disposed on a first side of the electrocaloric film. An active area of the electrocaloric film is provided, which is not covered by the first support film on the first side of the electrocaloric film. Electrical connections are provided to electrodes disposed on opposing sides of the electrocaloric film in the active area.

A method of operating a heat exchanger is disclosed in which an electric field is applied to a hydrophobic surface having condensed water droplets thereon to reduce a contact angle between the individual droplet surfaces and the hydrophobic surface, and to increase droplet surface energy to a second surface energy level. The electric field is removed to increase the contact angle between the individual droplet surfaces and the hydrophobic surface, and to reduce droplet surface energy to a third surface energy level. The third surface energy level is greater than the first surface energy level and greater than a surface energy level for a free droplet. A portion of the droplet surface energy is converted to kinetic energy to detach droplets from the hydrophobic surface. The detached droplets are removed from the heat rejection side fluid flow path.
