Described is a method for segmenting an anatomical part, including identifying a landmark on a contour/surface of a 2D/3D model of the anatomical part in an ultrasound image, assigning a weight to the landmark, identifying different appearance patterns of a region around the landmark based on a previously stored training set; and applying a filter to the different appearance patterns of the region around the landmark in order to identify contours of the anatomical part.

A device for generating composite images of dynamically changing surgical anatomy includes circuitry configured to receive, from an endoscopic imaging device, endoscopic image data. The circuitry is configured to receive, from a tomographic imaging device, intra-operative tomographic image data. The circuitry is configured to receive, from a tracking device, spatial tracking data corresponding to the endoscopic imaging device and the tomographic imaging device. The circuitry is configured to generate real-time dynamically changing composite image data by overlaying, based on the spatial tracking data, the intra-operative tomographic image data on the endoscopic image data. The circuitry is configured to output the composite image data to a display.

System for generating composite images for endoscopic surgery of moving and deformable anatomy

An electromechanical drive system with drop-in capability allows manipulation of the majority of existing endoscopes. The invention does not require retrofitting of existing endoscopes and maintains the current clinical workflow. The drive system can be controlled through a human/machine interface, which could consist of a variety of different input devices, including a joystick, keyboard, or game controller.
