During operation, an electronic device receives a packet or a frame associated with a second electronic device, where the packet or the frame includes information specifying a factory reset command. For example, the second electronic device may be a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server or may perform functions of a DHCP server. Moreover, the packet or the frame may include an acknowledgment (ACK) in a discover, offer, request and acknowledgment (DORA) procedure, and the information may be included in an optionsubfield or an optionsubfield in the packet or the frame. In response to receiving the factory reset command, the electronic device performs a factory reset. Note that the factory reset may restore firmware in the electronic device to a factory-fresh version and a configuration of the electronic device to a factory-fresh state, may erase memory in the electronic device.

Remote factory reset of an electronic device

An electronic device that provides modified electrical signals is described. An interface circuit in the electronic device may provide electrical signals for an antenna module, which may be coupled to the interface circuit by a cable, and the electrical signals may correspond to or may specify an output transmit-power level at the interface circuit. Then, the interface circuit may receive feedback about an input transmit-power level at the antenna module. Based on the feedback, a data rate and/or a modulation and coding scheme, the interface circuit may provide the modified electrical signals for the antenna module, where the modified electrical signals correspond to a modified output transmit-power level at the interface circuit. In some embodiments, the feedback is provided by repurposing, during a different operating mode, signal lines that otherwise specify an antenna pattern.

A method for remotely communicating with a Broadband modem is provided. Once a communication error is detected on a Broadband modem, a Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) connection is established between the Broadband modem and a remote server. Communication then occurs with the remote server via the POTS connection using Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones. The communication preferably comprises transmitting information associated with the communication error to the remote server via the POTS connection using DTMF tones and receiving a diagnosis from the remote server via the POTS connection in DTMF tones. A system for remotely diagnosing a Broadband modem as well as a Broadband modem is also provided.

A modem that includes a list of the multiple domain names is firstly provided. Each of the domain names is associated with a different Broadband Service Node (BSN). A PPPoE session is established, and an authentication request, containing the identifier and a generic password, is transmitted from a modem to multiple domain names over the PPPoE network. Subsequently, authorization is received from at least one of the domain names. The authorization preferably comprises at least one static Internet Protocol (IP) address. The modem then obtains full configuration details from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The invention also provides a system and a computer program product for provisioning broadband service in a Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet (PPPoE) network.

System and method for remotely communicating with a broadband modem

A Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) connection is established between a Broadband modem and a remote server. A configuration request is then transmitted from the Broadband modem to the remote server using DTMF tones. Subsequently a domain name associated with a Broadband Service Node (BSN) and a user identifier, such as a telephone number, is received from the remote server via the POTS connection using Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones. A PPPoE session is then established using the domain name, by firstly authenticating the Broadband modem for the PPPoE session and then configuring the DSL modem. This configuration is accomplished by transmitting a request for configuration details from the Broadband modem to the BSN having the domain name and then receiving configuration details from the configuration server. The Broadband modem then automatically configures itself using the configuration details.

System and method for provisioning broadband service in a PPPoE network using DTMF communication

According to the invention there is provided a computer implemented method for provisioning broadband service in a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) network. A PPPoE session is established, and a username is randomly chosen from a list of usernames stored on a modem. An authentication request is then transmitted from the modem to a Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) over a PPPoE network. The BRAS subsequently load balances the authentication request between the multiple Broadband Service Nodes (BSNs) and transmits the authentication request to one of the multiple BSNs determined by the load balancing. The modem then receives authorization from at least one of the multiple BSNs. The authorization preferably comprises a temporary dynamic Internet Protocol (IP) address. Full configuration details, including a static IP address, are then obtained from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The invention also provides a system and computer program product for performing the above.

System and method for provisioning broadband service in a PPPoE network using a random username

A switching device and method for selecting among a plurality of hosts on a bus, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB). The switching device includes a first hub to be coupled to first host controller and a second hub to be coupled to second host controller. A first selection device is to be coupled to a first peripheral device and the first and second hub devices. The first selection device is to selectively couple the first peripheral device to one of the first and second host devices in response to a selection signal. A second selection device is to be coupled to a second peripheral device and the first and second hub devices. The second selection device is to selectively couple the second peripheral device to one of the first and second host controllers in response to the selection signal. The selection signal is generated in response to one of the host controllers. During the switching process among the host controllers and peripheral devices, a cable disconnect and reconnect between the host controllers and peripheral devices is emulated.
