An installation template for installing a door closer. The installation consists of an under sheet coated with a release agent and two installation templates, a pull side template and a push side template, both coated with a self-stick adhesive, attached to the under sheet. The pull side template and the push side template include two sets of written instructions, each set being upside down to the other set, which permits each template to be used for both right hand and left hand installations. The use of both pull side and push side templates on the single under sheet along with the two sets of written instructions, allows a single template to be used for both push side installation and pull side installation of both right hand and left hand doors.

Installation template for a door closer

A method of installing a door closer. The method includes selecting a pull-side mounting template adhered to a first side of a releasable backing or a push-side template adhered to a second side of the releasable backing. The selected template is removed from the backing and is separated into a door portion and a door-frame portion. An edge of the door portion is aligned with a top edge of a door and adhered thereto, and an edge of the door-frame portion is aligned with a door frame and adhered thereto. A rod and shoe bracket is attached to a rod and shoe indicator on one of the door portion or the door-frame portion, and a door closer is attached to a door closer indicator on the other of the door portion or the door-frame portion.

A door closer and mounting bracket for attaching the door closer to either the door or the door frame. The door closer includes two pins at one end for engaging corresponding holes on the mounting bracket and the mounting bracket includes a resilient clip for engaging the body of the door closer.

A method for making a hydraulic door closer includes the steps of molding material to form an elongated single-piece housing having a longitudinal cylindrical bore extending from a first open end thereof to a closed second end, a transverse intersecting bore, and mounting feet; installing a spring within the cylindrical bore at the closed end of the housing; installing a piston within the cylindrical bore in contact with the spring, the piston having a toothed rack thereon and an opening in each end to permit passage of fluid therethrough; installing a pinion gear in the transverse intersecting bore in meshed engagement with the toothed rack; installing an endplug with a port in the first end of the longitudinal cylindrical bore; and inserting a valve device through the port, for controlling flow of fluid through the piston, and for thereby controlling closing speed of the door. The single-piece housing as well as other components may be molded from metal or polymeric materials. Polymeric materials are preferred for their flexibility, lubricity, and moldability.

Method for making a hydraulic door closer having a one-piece molded

A linear drive power door operator selectively and automatically opens and closes a door swingably mounted on a door jamb. The door operator includes a power screw disposed within a housing and a drive which powers the rotation of the power screw for moving a piston having a threaded bore threadably engaging the power screw linearly upon activation of the drive. A rack having teeth is engaged by the piston for moving the rack linearly from end-to-end. The power door operator further includes a pinion having teeth threadably engaging the teeth of the rack. The pinion is rotatable about a vertical axis upon the side-to-side linear movement of the rack. At least one link arm is pivotally connected at one of its ends to the pinion and pivotally connected at its other end to the door. A control device controls the operation of the drive for moving the door between a closed position and an open position. The control device activates the drive for moving the piston and the rack from a first position in which the door is closed to a second position in which the door is fully open, and any position in between.

A valve for regulating speed of operation of a door closer, includes an elongated hollow tubular body having a closed first end with driving provisions thereon, an open second end, and an orifice in its sidewall adjacent its closed first end; an endplug for a cylinder bore of the door closer, the endplug having an axial port in which the closed first end of the tubular body is rotatably supported and which provides a fluid tight seal about the outer surface of the tubular body; an annular valve seat adjacent the endplug, the seat being fixed against rotation, and having an open portion and a closed portion which provide varying degrees of occlusion of the orifice when the tubular body is rotated; and a seal plate check valve captured against a piston head and occluding an opening therein during closing, the plate also providing a seal about the outer surface of the tubular body near the open second end thereof.

Speed regulating valve for fluid filled door closers

A self-trimming shield for the gap between a hinged door heel and its casing, includes a unitary strip of length approximately equal to the height of the door and made up of a sequentially arrayed plurality of elongated parallel panels. Opposite end panels of the plurality are attached, respectively, to the door and casing on the side opposite the hinge, while inner panels of said plurality are articulably connected with the end panels and with each other in such manner that, when the door is closed, the panels automatically fold to lie in close proximity to the door so that the shield appears to be an integral part of the door trim.
