Method for removing tar-forming hydrocarbons from an effluent gas mixtures from Chemical Vapor Deposition or Chemical Vapor Infiltration processes. Method includes passing at elevated temperature effluent gas mixture containing hydrogen, methane, and high molecular weight hydrocarbons through a bed that contains iron pellets, thereby decomposing tar-forming high molecular weight hydrocarbons in the effluent gas mixture. Apparatus including a de-tarring vessel () having a packed bed () of iron or iron oxide pellets () resting over a perforated distributor plate () and having an exhaust port (), said de-tarring vessel being operatively linked via an exhaust port () to a CVI or CVD reactor vessel.

Method of removing tar-forming gases from CVD/CVI furnace effluent

A method of making self-supporting ceramic composite structures having filler embedded therein includes infiltrating a permeable mass of filler with polycrystalline material comprising an oxidation reaction product obtained by oxidation of a parent metal such as aluminum. The self-supporting ceramic composite structure optionally contains therein non-oxidized constituents of the parent metal. The structure is formed by placing a parent metal adjacent to a permeable filler and heating the assembly to melt the parent metal and provide a molten body of parent metal which is contacted with a suitable oxidant. Within a certain temperature region and optionally, aided by one or more dopants in or on the parent metal, molten parent metal will migrate through previously formed oxidation reaction product into contact with the oxidant, causing the oxidation reaction product to grow so as to embed the adjacent filler and provide the composite structure. The parent metal may be provided as a body of metal placed in contact with an exterior surface of the permeable mass. Alternatively, the parent metal may be placed adjacent to the filler material by admixing a plurality of discrete bodies of parent metal (e.g., particulate metal) into the permeable mass. In this embodiment, the growth of oxidation reaction product still embeds the adjacent filler material without substantial change in the size or shape of the permeable mass, but does not result in the creation of voids at the former locations of the bodies of parent metal.

Methods of making composite ceramic articles having embedded filler

There is provided a method for producing a self-supporting ceramic composite comprising (1) a ceramic matrix obtained by oxidation of an aluminum zinc alloy to form a polycrystalline oxidation reaction product of the metal with an oxidant, and (2) one or more fillers embedded by the matrix. The metal alloy and permeable mass of filler having at least one defined surface boundary are oriented relative to each other so that formation of the oxidation reaction product will occur into said mass of filler and in a direction towards said defined surface boundary. On heating the metal to a first temperature above its melting point but below the melting point of said oxidation reaction product to form a body of molten parent metal, the molten metal reacts with said oxidant to form said oxidation reaction product which infiltrates said mass of filler to said defined surface boundary. The resulting infiltrated mass is heated to a second temperature in order to remove or oxidize at least a substantial portion of one or more residual non-oxidized metallic constituents from or in said infiltrated mass without substantial formation of said oxidation reaction product beyond said defined surface boundary, thereby producing a self-supporting ceramic composite.
