A device having indirect visual indicators to communicate information about states of operation is disclosed herein. The visual indicators may output a visual indication based on operational states of the device or other systems associated with the device. In some examples, a thermostat may include a downcast light that outputs a visual indication based on a mode of operation of the thermostat or a mode of operation of an associated heating, cooling, and ventilation (HVAC) system. Various characteristics of the visual indication may be altered to output different information. In some examples, a color of the visual indication may change based on the modes of operation or the visual indication may be pulsed based on the modes of operation.

A hidden display apparatus, system, and method. A display apparatus embodiment may include a face layer and a projection layer, with the projection layer positioned behind the face layer. The face layer may include a front side and a back side. The front side may include a first area configured to display high resolution images and a second area positioned around the first area. The first area and the second area may be made of the same material, and have similar color(s) and/or patterns. The projection layer may include a light source operative in an active mode and an inactive mode. When in the active mode, the projection layer may project light to the face layer to display images in the first area. When in the inactive mode, the face layer may be visually obscured so that the first area and the second area together display a colored surface.

Various embodiments relate to a systems and methods for downloading one or more effects to an effects unit. One or more effects may be received. On an effects unit. Audio signals for the one or more effects may be processed based on instructions for processing the audio signals received with the one or more effects. For each subsequent effect received on the effect unit, the processing of the audio signals may be reprogrammed. The one or more effects may be transmitted for output from the effects unit.
