An information handling system has a regulator, a power indication network, a PSU, and a BMC. The regulator receives a system power level indication and provides power to a processor based upon the power indication. The power indication network includes a first resistor stage to shunt the power indication to a ground plane, and a second resistor stage selectably to shunt the power indication to the ground plane. The PSU provides the power indication as a current output where a level of current output indicates a power level provided by the PSU. The BMC determines a power budget for the information handling system, calculates a number of resistor stages to couple to the ground plane based on the power budget, when the number is less than or equal to one, selects the second resistor stage to be uncoupled from the ground plane, and when the number is greater than one, to select the second resistor stage to be coupled to the ground plane.

Dynamic PSys resistor network for improved accuracy and reduced transients

A power management system includes a power infrastructure having power infrastructure components that couple computing devices to power source(s), and a power management subsystem coupled to the computing devices. The power management subsystem identifies power requirement information for each of the computing devices and power transmission limitation information for the power infrastructure components, and determines a power infrastructure architecture that identifies how the power infrastructure components couple the computing devices to the power source(s). The power management subsystem then uses the power requirement information, the power transmission limitation information, and the power infrastructure architecture to generate and provide a respective input current limit to each of the computing devices. Each respective input current limit is configured to maximize performance of the respective computing device for which it was generated while ensuring availability of the power infrastructure in the event of an unavailability of a subset of the power infrastructure components.

Power management system

An information handling system includes a power supply unit, a processor, and a baseboard management controller. The power supply unit includes a first energy counter configured to store first power level information associated with an amount of power supplied by the power supply unit. The processor includes a second energy counter configured to store second power level information associated with an amount of power consumed by the processor. The baseboard management controller periodically calibrates the second power level to the first power level based upon a variable calibration cycle time.

Maximizing system power calibration algorithm accuracy

An information handling system polls telemetry data from sensors associated with a central processing unit, and determines current offsets for each one of the sensors based on the telemetry data. The system may also determine a domain current offset associated with a calibration domain, determine a voltage regulator offset based on the domain current offset, and adjust power provided by the voltage regulator to the central processing unit based on the voltage regulator offset.

Methods and systems for managing operation of data processing systems are disclosed. The data processing systems may include power supplies that may be impacted by various conditions. To manage exposure to the conditions, the power supplies may self-monitor for occurrences of the conditions and report the occurrences to a logic device using a point-to-point channel. The logic device automatically identify and implement actions to reduce an impact of the occurrences of the conditions.

System and method for managing conditions impacting power supplies of data processing systems

An information handling system includes first and second power supplies, a chassis BMC, and a sled. The power supplies each assert a power good indication when the power supply is providing power on a power rail. The chassis BMC receives the power good indications and asserts a loss of redundancy indication when one of the power good indications is deasserted. The sled includes a sled BMC and a host processing system. The sled receives the loss of redundancy indication and in response, asserts a processor over temperature indication to the host processing system. When both power good indications are asserted, the chassis BMC directs the sled BMC to operate the host processing system in accordance with a normal operation sled current limit. When one of the power good indications is deasserted, the chassis BMC directs the sled BMC to operate the host processing system in accordance with a reduced power operation sled current limit. The reduced power operation sled current limit is a lower limit than the normal operation sled current limit.

Input current limiting for redundant power supply loss on modular platforms

An information handling system includes a management controller that may determine average power consumption of a processor, and determine average power measurement at a power supply unit. If the average power consumption of the processor does not match the average power measurement at the power supply unit, then the system may calibrate the average power consumption of the processor to match the average power measurement at the power supply unit.

A system may include a chassis comprising a plurality of bays, each of the plurality of bays configured to receive a respective modular information handling system, a shared infrastructure comprising a plurality of components which are shared by modular information handling systems received in the plurality of bays, and a chassis management controller communicatively coupled to the plurality of bays and configured to determine a power consumption for each respective modular information handling system and if the power consumption for a respective modular information handling system exceeds a maximum sled connector current limit for the respective modular information handling system, communicate a message to the respective modular information handling system to power down the respective modular information handling system.

Methods and systems for power management are disclosed. The disclosed methods and system for power management may reduce the likelihood of a data processing system failing to meet power budget or other types of goals regarding power consumption, use, and/or provisioning. To reduce the likelihood of the data processing system failing to meet power related goals, the data processing system may include two power managers. An integrated power manager may manage power consumption based on a current-based, fast changing representation of the quantity of power being supplied by the power supplies. In contrast, a system power manager may manage power consumption based on digital representations of the power supplied by the power supplies, which may refresh the digital representations less quickly than the rate at which the analog current based representation is refreshed.

System and method for power consumption management

A power management system includes a first power grid coupled to a first circuit breaker, and a first power distribution unit coupled to the first circuit breaker. A server device includes server components, and at least one first power supply unit coupled to the first power distribution unit. A power management subsystem in the server device is coupled to the server components and the at least one first power supply unit. The power management subsystem monitors a first input current draw of each first power supply unit, and determines whether the first input current draw exceeds a first input current limit that is based on the first circuit breaker. In response the first input current draw exceeding the first input current limit, the power management subsystem throttles the server components to reduce the first input current draw below the first input current limit.

A method may include, in a system comprising a plurality of power supply units, determining a redundancy configuration of the plurality of power supply units, determining a power capacity of the plurality of power supply units, determining a number of modular information handling systems installed in the system, determining a chassis-level maximum transient power limit for each of the modular information handling systems based on the redundancy configuration, the power capacity, and the number of modular information handling systems, determining a chassis-level maximum average power limit for each of the modular information handling systems, and communicating the chassis-level maximum transient power limit and chassis-level maximum average power limit to a respective baseboard management controller of each of the modular information handling systems, wherein each respective baseboard management controller is configured to determine if sled-level power requirements of its respective information handling system are within the chassis-level maximum transient power limit and chassis-level maximum average power limit.

Systems and methods for enabling power budgeting in an information handling system comprising a plurality of modular information handling systems

A system may include a plurality of power supply units and a management device communicatively coupled to the plurality of power supply units and configured to determine a minimum number of power supplies required to support a maximum peak power budget for components of the system, determine a minimum number of power supplies required to support a minimum peak power budget for components of the system, and reduce a throttle threshold of a number of healthy power supplies of the system at which a fast throttling of the components of the system will occur if the minimum number of power supplies required to support the maximum peak power budget is equal to the minimum number of power supplies required to support the minimum peak power budget.

Systems and methods for optimizing fault tolerant redundancy for an information handling system with multiple power supply units

An information handling system has power supply units (PSUs), each of which includes an input over current warning (OCW) setting that provides a reference for an amount of an input current drawn by a corresponding workload. Each of the PSUs sends an interrupt to a baseboard management controller (BMC) when the amount of the input current drawn by the corresponding workload exceeds the corresponding configured input OCW setting. In response to the received interrupt, the BMC requests an adjustment to the corresponding workload.

Method and apparatus for improving power management by controlling a system input current in a power supply unit

A multi-power rail PSU includes a first power rail coupled to first PSUs, and a second power rail coupled to second PSUs. A controller subsystem receives a request to enable the first power rail and the second power rail and, in response, enables one of the first PSUs to transmit power to the first power rail, and enables one of the second PSUs to transmit power to the second power rail. The controller subsystem then performs respective PSU mismatch checks on the first PSUs and the second PSUs, and identifies compatible first PSUs for the first power rail, and compatible second PSUs for the second power rail. The controller subsystem then enables transmission of power to the first power rail from the compatible first PSUs, and enables transmission of power to the second power rail from the compatible second PSUs.
