A low-profile, tri-filar, helix antenna having circular polarization (CP) includes a single feed, in the absence of an internal feed network. The antenna includes three metal, bent, quarter-wave monopoles that are physically positioned at 0, 120, and 240 degrees, respectively, on a top flat surface of the antenna. One of the monopoles is directly-fed, and the other two monopoles are parasitically coupled to the directly-fed monopole. Metal perturbations on one or both of the two parasitic monopoles control their coupling-phase to the directly-fed monopole. One of the parasitic monopoles couples at positive 120 degrees to the directly-fed monopole, and the other parasitic monopole couples at negative 120 degrees to the directly-fed monopole. Various perturbation options generate this CP phasing. One of the parasitic monopoles can have a capacitive shunt, and the other parasitic monopole can have a series inductance, or only one parasitic monopole can include a perturbation, either capacitive or inductive, depending on the sense of the CP that is desired. The three monopoles are supported by a dielectric substrate, or they are free-standing. A ground plane is provided directly under the three monopoles.

A disk-shaped two-antenna assembly contains a CP ring-antenna and a linear-monopole-antenna. The bottom surface of a ring-shaped dielectric member holds a ground plane. A circular radiating element is located on a top surface of the ring-shaped dielectric member. A linear radiating element is positioned coincident with a central axis of the two-antenna assembly, and a top end thereof carries a metal disk that extends perpendicular to the central axis of the two-antenna assembly. A centrally-located void lies between the ground plane and the metal disk to provide for the housing of electronic components. Metal RF shields are electrically connected to the ground plane and are located at the top portion of this void, intermediate the bottom-located ground plane and the top-located metal disk.

An efficient antenna exhibiting primarily circular polarization is described. Electrical performance is similar to that of a patch antenna having the same volume; however, greater bandwidth is achieved. The antenna consists of four radiating elements arranged in a semi-spiral configuration on a dielectric material, with a shunt feed system. The novel feed system incorporates a phase delay line, with two adjacent elements fed. The other two elements are parasitically coupled to the first two, with a 180 degree phase difference, resulting in a progressive phase shift of 90 degrees between the four elements. Circular polarization is a product of the symmetric geometry, as opposed to a circularly polarized patch antenna, which utilizes an offset feed. The antenna may be placed directly on a printed wiring board having a ground plane. The antenna is well suited for GPS applications and has a smaller major surface area than a patch antenna with comparable performance.

The antenna includes three metal, bent, quarter-wave monopoles positioned at 0&deg;, 120&deg;, and 240&deg; on a top surface of the antenna. One of the monopoles is directly fed, and the other two are parasitically coupled to the fed monopole. Metal perturbations on the parasitic monopoles control their coupling phase to the fed monopole, and determine the antenna's polarization. Without metal perturbations, the parasitic monopoles are linear polarized and both monopoles are coupled to the fed monopole at &plusmn;120. With metal perturbations, the parasitic monopoles are CP polarized and coupled at &plus;120 degrees to the fed monopole. Various perturbations, capacitive and inductive shunts options are possible. The three monopoles are supported by a dielectric substrate, or they are freestanding.

The present invention comprises a substantially omnidirectional antenna with minimal gain variation over the 360 degree azimuth. A plurality of biconical antenna elements are stacked, wherein a feed line passes through the center of the biconical antenna elements. The feed line is designed to provide the proper quantity of power to each biconical antenna element without the use of a power divider. Each biconical antenna element is formed by two truncated flared apart reflecting surfaces. Each biconical antenna element is attached to a nonconductive collar above and below.
