A fluorescent lamp including a lamp bulb which has been coated with phosphor powder which has been ground in an attritor to reduce the powder weight without loss in light output and light maintenance. A process to produce such a fluorescent lamp utilizes a particular sequence of steps including firing, milling, attritor milling, and washing to produce an improved stir-in alkaline earth halophosphate.

Fluorescent lamp with improved phosphor coating and related process

An incandescent lamp is provided with a phosphor coating on its lamp envelope. The phosphor coating alters the spectral distribution of radiation emitted by the lamp and acts as a diffuser. In one embodiment, the phosphor coating absorbs radiation at wavelengths below 500 nanometers and emits radiation at wavelengths above 500 nanometers to provide an improved bugfoiler lamp. In another embodiment, the phosphor coating absorbs radiation in the ultraviolet, violet and blue wavelength range and emits radiation at longer wavelengths that more effectively stimulate the human eye.

Disclosed is a yellow incandescent bugfoiler pigment coating comprising a fine-ground blend of praseodymium doped zirconium silicate and silica. This cadmium-free blend is applied electrostatically in three coats to the interior of a bulb to diffuse the light and block the emitted UV wavelengths. The color of the blend will intensify with increasing heat and return to its initial yellow color upon cooling.

Method of providing an improved phosphor coating

Disclosed is a method for applying a yellow incandescent bugfoiler pigment coating comprising a fine-ground blend of praseodymium doped zirconium silicate and silica. This cadmium-free blend is preferably applied electrostatically in three coats to the interior of a bulb to diffuse the light and block the emitted UV wavelengths. Method of applying cadium-free incandescent lamp powder coating

An improved method for preparing a phosphor is disclosed. The method of the invention includes preparing a solution comprising the non-oxygen elements of the phosphor in molar proportions equal to the respective molar proportions of the non-oxygen elements in the phosphor; precipitating the non-oxygen elements from the solution through the addition of a precipitating agent; spray drying the solution including the precipitate to form a spray dried powder; and firing the spray dried powder in a single firing step. The single firing step of the method comprises (a) increasing the temperature of the spray dried powder at an even and controlled rate from room temperature to a firing temperature sufficiently high to convert the spray dried powder to the phosphor; and (b) maintaining the temperature of the spray dried powder at the firing temperature for a period of time sufficient to produce the phosphor. The method is particularly useful in the preparation of Eu.sup.2+ -activted strontium borate phosphor.
