The present disclosure is directed to liquid boron compounds for use in scintillation. The present disclosure further relates to liquid boron compounds for admixture to plastic and liquid scintillators.

Boron compounds for use in scintillators and admixture to scintillators

The disclosed subject matter provides a chiral host-guest composition for a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture, the host-guest composition comprising a chiral guest compound and an achiral host compound, wherein the host-guest composition induces a greater degree of polarization in the liquid crystal mixture than is induced in the mixture with a comparable amount of the chiral guest compound in the absence of the achiral host compound. The chiral guest is a fluorinated compound comprising a aryl or heteroaryl core substituted with an alkyl chain, wherein the alkyl chain includes one or more fluorine atoms, each fluorine atom being bonded to a chiral carbon atom. The achiral host possesses a central thiadiazole core, with at least one aryl/heteroaryl wing, further substituted with alkyl or alkoxy groups.

Synergistic host-guest interactions in FLC mixtures for increased polarization and decreased switching speed

Ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions including organic ion pair compounds wherein image sticking is reduced or eliminated. Use of the ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions in a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device allows for rapid image refresh rates without required a DC-balancing algorithm. The organic ion pair compounds provide electrical resistivity values for the compositions that result in reduced image sticking when the compositions are used in FLC display devices.

The invention provides cross-linked lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) copolymers having ordered nanometer-sized pores lined with functional groups. The copolymers are formed by copolymerizing LLC monomers with strong LLC character and functionalized monomers with no or weak LLC character to form an LLC phase. Both the LLC monomers and the functionalized monomers contain hydrogen-bonding groups and hydrogen-bonding is believed to assist in the formation of the LLC phase of the blended mixture. Different classes of functional groups useful for the invention include, but are not limited to, acidic groups, basic groups, catalytic groups, oxidizing agents, reducing agents, polymerization initiators, binding agents, optically active groups, and electrically active groups. The invention also provides methods for making the cross-linked LLC copolymers of the invention. In these methods, the LLC monomer and the functionalized monomer are blended in a polar solvent, thereby allowing self-assembly of the first and second monomer into an LLC phase. The LLC phase in then cross-linked with retention of the LLC microstructure.
