Novel copolymer blends comprising (a) a copolymer of alkenyl aromatic monomers containing from about 10 to about 70 percent by weight of an isopropenyl aromatic monomer, (b) a block copolymer having an alkenyl aromatic monomer blocks and polybutadiene blocks containing from about 10 to about 70 percent by weight isopropenyl aromatic monomer in the alkenyl aromatic block and from about 15 to about 50 weight percent butadiene, (c) a block copolymer having alkenyl aromatic monomer blocks and polybutadiene blocks containing from about 10 to about 70 percent by weight isopropenyl aromatic monomer in the alkenyl aromatic monomer and from about 55 to about 80 weight percent butadiene, and (d) a polyolefin.

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins are prepared by the mass or mass-suspension process employing a tertiary-butyl peroxy initiator having a 10-hour half-life between about 50.degree. and 95.degree. C. wherein initial polymerization of up to about 10 weight percent solids is conducted under plug flow conditions. From about 5 to 10 percent conversion to about 40 percent conversion is polymerized with agitation. The remaining polymerization is done with or without agitation. Improved impact resistance is obtained.

Process for the polymerization of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins

Compounds of the structure R(SCH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.2 X).sub.n when n=1 to 4 and R is a hydrocarbon, ether, ester, acetal, hydroxy aliphatic, hydroxy aromatic, imide or amide group or halogenated derivatives thereof are prepared by reacting 1-halo-3-mercapto-2-propanol with an aliphatically unsaturated compound using free radical initiators as catalysts. The compounds in which R is an unsaturated or polyunsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of 2 to 24 carbon atoms, or an unsaturated or polyunsaturated cycloaliphatic group, and those in which the aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group is connected through two or more of the polyunsaturated to two or more --S--CH.sub.2 CHOHCHCl groups, and compounds where R is an alkylene or polyalkylene substituted aromatic group and the hydroxy, thioalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, ester, carbamidoalkyl and sulfamidoalkyl, halogenated derivatives of said groups are new compounds. The thioether halohydrins can be converted to epoxides. The process utilizing a radioactive energy source as a catalyst is new.

Halohydrin thioethers

Compounds of the structure R(SCH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.2 X).sub.n when n = 1 to 4 and R is a hydrocarbon, ether, ester, acetal, hydroxy aliphatic, hydroxy aromatic, imide or amide group or halogenated derivatives thereof are prepared by reacting 1-halo-3-mercapto-2-propanol with an aliphatically unsaturated compound using free radical initiators as catalysts. The compounds in which R is an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of 2 to 24 carbon atoms, or an unsaturated cycloaliphatic group, and those in which the aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group is connected to two or more --S--CH.sub.2 CHOHCHCl groups, and compounds where R is an alkylene substituted aromatic group and hydroxy, thioalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, ester, carbamidoalkyl and sulfamidoalkyl, halogenated derivatives of said groups are new compounds. The thioether halohydrins can be converted to epoxides. The process utilizing a radioactive energy source as a catalyst is new.

Halohydrin thioethers and method of preparation

An improved resinous structure is disclosed. The structure has a transparent resinous matrix having a light absorbance (optical density) at 640 millimicrons wavelength which is not greater than 0.07 when the structure has a thickness of 10 mils. The continuous matrix polymer is a polymer of about 65 to 95 parts by weight of styrene and 5 to 35 parts by weight of methylmethacrylate. The structure contains a discontinuous phase of a diene rubber in a proportion of about 4 to 12 parts by weight. The rubber is present in the form of particles having an average diameter not exceeding 2 microns, the particles are of a cellular nature and principally of a closed-cell configuration. The cell walls of the particles are not greater than about 0.15 microns in thickness. The rubber particles contain, occluded therein, polymer of a composition generally identical to the matrix polymer. Such resinous bodies are transparent, impact resistant and suitable for many packaging applications.

Transparent impact styrene polymer structure

An improved resinous structure is disclosed. The structure has a transparent resinous matrix of polystyrene, a light absorbance (optical density) at 640 millimicrons wave length which is not more than 0.10 when the structure has a thickness of 10 mils. The structure contains a discontinuous phase of a diene rubber in a proportion of about five to twelve parts by weight per hundred parts by weight of the structure. The rubber is present in the form of particles having an average diameter not exceeding about 2 microns. The particles are of a cellular nature and principally of a closed-cell configuration. The cell walls of the particles are not more than about 0.15 microns in thickness. The rubber particles contain occluded therein a polymer of a composition generally identical to the matrix polymer. Such resinous bodies are transparent, impact resistant, and suitable for many packaging applications.

The invention consists of the compounds of the formula ##EQU1## (hereinafter DE), wherein X is chlorine or bromine, A is a vicinal alkylene of from 2 to about 8 carbon atoms which may bear a phenyl, hydroxy, chlorine or bromine substituent and R.sub.1 is an alkylene of from 4 to about 7 carbon atoms, two terminal carbon atoms of which are joined to C' to form a carbocyclic group upon which X- and XAO- are vicinally substituted and m and n are independently 0 or 1. These compounds are prepared by reacting the halogen XX with a mixture of the appropriate vinyl R.sub.1 cycloalkene (hereinafter VCR.sub.1), and the epoxide AO. Such compounds are useful as solvents and as reactants in the production of cycloaliphatic polythiols which are useful in curing polyepoxide resins.
