A fastener cartridge can include, one, a cartridge body comprising a deck and a plurality of fastener cavities and, two, a plurality of fasteners positioned in the fastener cavities. The cartridge body can further comprise extensions extending from the deck having different sizes and/or configurations. The extensions can control the flow of tissue relative to the deck and/or support the fasteners as they are ejected from the fastener cavities.

An apparatus is provided for stapling tissue. The apparatus includes an anvil and a trocar selectively coupled with the anvil. The anvil may have an inner opening and a plurality of staple pockets aligned around a surface of the anvil. The anvil may be inserted trans-orally through an esophagus prior to being coupled with the trocar. The trocar may include a shaft and a locking assembly. The locking assembly may secure the anvil in position relative to the trocar when the locking assembly is in the expanded position. The apparatus may also include an alignment assembly to align the staple pockets of the anvil relative to the apparatus. The apparatus may also include an introduction assembly to guide the anvil through the esophagus.

In various embodiments, a layer of material can comprise a body, a proximal end portion, and a distal end portion. The proximal end portion can be releasably secured to a staple cartridge of a surgical end effector, and the distal end portion can be releasably secured to an anvil of the surgical end effector. The layer of material can comprise a tissue thickness compensator.

A surgical stapling assembly comprising an anvil, a cartridge channel, a staple cartridge configured to be operably positioned in the channel, a firing member, and a ramp is disclosed. The channel comprises a base, an elongate internal slot, and a proximal channel opening defined in the base. The elongate internal slot comprises an encased internal passageway. The proximal channel opening is separate from the elongate internal slot. The firing member is movable from a first position to a second position distal to the first position. The firing member comprises a lateral extension configured to be received in the encased internal passageway as the firing member travels through the elongate internal slot during a firing motion. The proximal channel opening is configured to indicate when the firing member is in the first position. The ramp is for guiding the lateral extension into the encased internal passageway during the firing motion.

An anvil-attachable layer for use with a surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, wherein a proximal end portion of the layer is attached to a staple cartridge assembly, for example. The layer may be attached to the staple cartridge assembly by an adhesive, weld, or a staple-cartridge-based clamp, wherein the attachment is weak enough to allow the layer to pull away from the staple cartridge assembly with stapled tissue. Alternatively, the layer can include two or more lateral slits that define a connector region that can be cut by a knife of a surgical stapler to release the layer.

Electrically-powered surgical systems for cutting and welding solid organs

A surgical instrument includes an anvil selectively coupleable to a stapling head assembly and a trigger operable to fire staples into tissue compressed between the anvil and the stapling head assembly. In some versions, a lockout member may engage a securing feature to prevent actuation of the anvil relative to the stapling head assembly. For instance, a tab may engage a slot on an actuator, a screen door lock may provide frictional resistance or engage teeth on the actuator, a door may actuate into engagement with one or more recesses, geared teeth may mesh with teeth on the actuator, the lockout member may include a ratcheting assembly to engage actuator, and/or a push button may actuate into a recess while disengaging the lockout member. Alternatively, in some versions, the trigger actuation assembly may be disengaged prior to firing. An anvil position indicator may restrict engagement of the trigger actuation assembly.

A fastener cartridge can comprise a cartridge body including a plurality of cavities arranged in longitudinal rows. Some of the cavities can have fasteners removably stored therein. Other cavities can have deployable tissue engaging members stored therein which are movable from an undeployed position to a deployed position to engage tissue. In some instances, the fastener cartridge can include at least one longitudinal row of cavities which each include a deployable tissue engaging member. Such rows of cavities can comprise the outer-most rows of cavities in the fastener cartridge.

A robotic surgical system including a control system that controls the movement of a robotic arm is described. The robotic arm can be coupled to a tool assembly that includes an end effector positioned at a distal end of a shaft. The control system can assist with controlling the movement of the end effector and any tooling (e.g., cutting tool, boring tool, jaws, etc.) associated with the end effector, such as for either cutting through tissue or controlling a tension in the tissue. The tool assembly can include one or more sensors that measure a variety of forces or velocities associated with either the robotic arm or end effector. The control system can collect and monitor such sensed forces and velocities to determine and control one or more appropriate movement parameters associated with the robotic arm thereby controlling the cutting of tissue and preventing unwanted cutting of tissue. Furthermore, movement parameters associated with more than one robotic arm can be controlled by the control system.

An apparatus includes a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge includes staples, a deck, and a buttress. The deck defines a plurality of openings. Each opening of the plurality of openings is associated with a corresponding staple of the plurality of staples, such that each staple is configured to pass through a corresponding opening of the plurality of openings. The buttress is configured to detach from the staple deck in response to the staples being driven through the corresponding openings of the deck. The buttress is resiliently biased to transition from a first configuration while attached to the deck to a second configuration when detached from the deck. The buttress has a first length in the first configuration and a second length in the second configuration. The first length is longer than the second length.

An apparatus includes a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples and a deck defining a plurality of openings. Each opening of the plurality of openings is associated with a corresponding staple of the plurality of staples, such that each staple is configured to pass through a corresponding opening of the plurality of openings. The apparatus further includes a deformable feature configured to be coupled to tissue in response to actuation of the staple cartridge. Implantable materials for use with end effectors like surgical stapling devices, and methods for using the same, are generally provided. In some embodiments, a staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler can include a cartridge body having a plurality of staple cavities configured to seat staples therein and an adjunct material being associated with the cartridge such that the adjunct material is configured to be securely coupled to the cartridge body and configured to be securely attached to tissue by staples in the cartridge. The adjunct material can have positively-charged particles such that the adjunct material is configured to enhance healing in the tissue.
