A composite transparent lighting device is described. The device has a transparent substrate, an uniform distribution of low concentration dielectric particles, reflective perimeter and perimetral discrete light sources, of improved appearance both in the inoperative state of the device, and at the same time capable of providing good quality lighting when the device is active, i.e. when the discrete light sources on the perimeter of the device are turned on.

An improved getter device and method for forming a calcium-rich getter thin film in an electronic vacuum device is disclosed. The present invention relates to a process for depositing a calcium getter thin film inside a system operating under vacuum. The process comprises the steps of introducing into the system under vacuum at least one evaporable getter device with an air-stable calcium compound. The system is evacuated until a pressure value Pis reached. The system is then heated up to the calcium evaporation temperature of the stable compound. The system evacuation continues until a pressure value P, which is lower than P, is reached and the system is sealed. In a preferred embodiment, the heating step separates the two evacuation steps.

A getter comprising a calcium-aluminum compound including about 39% to about 43% calcium by weight produces a calcium vapor when sufficiently heated. The calcium vapor can condense to form a calcium film on an inside surface of a sealed evacuated enclosure such as a CRT to getter reactive species from the enclosed volume. A Field Emitter Device (FED) having a substantially reducing atmosphere is described. The atmosphere in a FED can be maintained substantially free of oxidizing gases and includes a partial pressure of hydrogen between about 1.times.10.sup.-7 millibar (mbar) and 1.times.10.sup.-3 mbar. In one embodiment, a non-evaporable getter material previously charged with hydrogen gas is placed inside the FED before the FED is sealed. The non-evaporable getter material can be charged by exposure to hydrogen gas at a pressure between about 1.times.10.sup.-4 and about 2 bar. Subsequently, the components forming the FED are sealed, and the FED is evacuated and hermetically sealed to the outside atmosphere.
