Bio-based terephthalic acid (bio-TPA), bio-based dimethyl terephthalate (bio-DMT), and bio-based polyesters, which are produced from a biomass containing a terpene or terpenoid, such as limonene are described, as well as the process of making these products. The bio-based polyesters include poly(alkylene terephthalate)s such as bio-based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (bio-PET), bio-based poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (bio-PTT), bio-based poly(butylene terephthalate) (bio-PBT), and bio-based poly(cyclohexylene dimethyl terephthalate) (bio-PCT).

A sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate is described which is produced by melt synthesis. A dihydroxy compound is reacted with a sulfobenzoic acid salt, then with an activated carbonate. The method results in a sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate which has a high percentage of sulfonated end groups, is soluble, and is transparent.

The present invention provides carboxy-terminated oligomeric polyester compositions useful in the preparation of 'weatherable' polymeric materials, for example weatherable copolyestercarbonates. In one aspect the present invention provides an oligomeric polyester composition comprising structural units derived from at least one diacid, at least one diaryl carbonate and at least one diol. The structural units derived from the diacid are present in a molar excess of from about 10% to about 40% based on a ratio of moles of diacid-derived structural units to moles of diol-derived structural units present in the oligomeric polyester composition. The oligomeric polyester composition is further characterized by the presence of at least some phenoxy end groups.

Polyesters are prepared by the reaction of a dicarboxylic acid, preferably an aromatic acid such as terephthalic acid, or an ester or ester-forming derivative thereof with a dihydroxy compound such as 1,4-butanediol in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising the combination of a titanium-based compound such as tetra-n-butyl titanate, a zirconium-based compound such as zirconium tetrakis(2,4-pentanedionate) and a phosphate-forming compound such as sodium dihydrogen phosphate. This catalyst composition affords polyesters having relatively low melt viscosities in short reaction times and does not produce an excessive level of undesirable reaction by-products.

The catalyst composition comprises the combination of (a) a titanium-based compound or zirconium-based compound, and (b) a lanthanide series compound or hafnium.
