A steering knuckle comprising a bearing connection interface (formed by a sleeve element) for connecting a wheel bearing to the steering knuckle and further connection interfaces (formed by a bracket for connection of a ball joint) for connecting the steering knuckle to an upper and lower vehicle suspension control arm. A sleeve element bore is adapted to one of receive a wheel bearing outer ring or serve as the outer ring. The sleeve element and the bracket are joined by a composite body comprising a fiber-reinforced material. The fiber-reinforced material comprises a long fiber molding compound is overmolded to a first (sleeve element) joining surface and to a second (bracket) joining surface. The first joining surface is a radially outer surface thereof. The long-fiber molding compound flows into a recessed portion of the first joining surface for mechanically locking the sleeve element to the composite body in an axial direction.

Lightweight steering knuckle

A method for axially preloading a bearing hub assembly having a rotatable hub, provided with rolling tracks and a bearing unit having a stationary radially outer ring, provided with rolling tracks, and a double row of rolling bodies disposed between the radially outer ring and the hub. The method requires the use of a bias unit and provides the following steps: a) feeding to an assembly station a hub bearing assembly, already assembled; b) verifying the value of the interference (C) between the radially outer ring and the bias unit; c) exerting an axial force (F) radially on the outer ring for the bias unit to deform under compression the radially outer ring that in turn will transmit a force to the rolling bodies via the raceways.

Method for preloading a hub bearing unit

A flanged bearing ring comprising a flange part joined to a ring part. The flange part is at least partly made of a fiber-reinforced matrix material, which is overmolded to the ring part. The flange part further comprises a first connection interface for enabling a component such as a vehicle wheel to be screwed or bolted to the flange part. The first connection interface comprises a plurality of bolt inserts which are embedded in the fiber-reinforced matrix material. At least one bolt insert is joined to the ring part by a continuous fiber tow that is wound around part of an outer surface of the bolt insert and of the ring part. Suitably, each bolt insert is joined to the ring part in this manner.

Bearing component with composite flange

A steering knuckle comprising a bearing connection point for connecting a bearing to the knuckle and comprising a further connection point for connecting the knuckle to a further component. The bearing connection point is formed by a first insert and the further connection point is formed by a second insert, which are joined by a composite body comprising a fiber-reinforced material that is overmolded to the first and second inserts. The bearing connection point and the further connection point are additionally joined by one or more continuous fiber tows that are wound around part of a radially outer surface of the first insert and of the second insert.

A flanged bearing ring is formed of two different materials joined together as a single piece, specifically a radially inner annular insert and a flanged, radially outer lightweight body formed about the insert. The insert has one or more inner raceways and is formed of a hard material, such as bearing steel. The outer body is made of a lightweight material, such as aluminium alloy, with a higher thermal expansion coefficient higher than that of the hard material from which the inner insert is formed. A radial projection formed on the insert extends into a radial groove of the outer body. The projection and the recess interlock the insert and the outer body so as to prevent relative movement.

The present invention resides in a method of manufacturing a bearing ring () for a rolling element bearing, wherein the bearing ring comprises a bearing race () made of a bearing grade steel and an overmolded part () that is preferably made of a lightweight metal such as aluminum or a thermoplastic material such as polyamide. According to the invention, the method comprises a step of hardening at least a raceway surface () of the bearing race prior to a step of joining the overmolded part () to the bearing race () in a molding process. In a further development, the method comprises a step of temperature control, to ensure that the temperature of the raceway surface () is kept below a predetermined value during the molding process.

Method of manufacturing a bearing ring

An assembly includes a first component joined to a second component by an intermediate joint. The first component has a first joining surface arranged coaxially and spaced in a juxtaposition around a second joining surface of the second component such that a groove is defined between the first and second joining surfaces. One of the first and second joining surfaces includes a concave portion and the other of the first and second joining surfaces has a convex portion radially opposite the concave portion, and the groove is formed by the convex and concave portions. The intermediate joint is formed by an insert ring pressed into the groove and deformed such that material of the insert ring fills the concave portion and surrounds the convex portion, and this locks the first and second components relative to each other in both axial directions.

A hub bearing assembly includes a hub of light metallic material forming a cylindrical portion, on which an inner tubular ring having a raceway is mounted; on the first inner tubular ring a second inner ring having a second raceway is fastened; formed between the cylindrical portion of the hub and the inner tubular ring is a cylindrical interstice containing a brazing bonding material or a structural adhesive which integrally binds the hub to the first inner tubular ring.

A bearing unit () for measuring forces exerted on the bearing unit, comprising an inner member () concentrically arranged around an outer member (), at least one rolling element bearing () and at least one load measuring device () with a cylindrical bore.
