The present invention relates to aqueous polymer dispersions having a polymer content of at least 55% by weight that are suitable for pressure sensitive adhesives. The invention also relates to a process for preparing these aqueous polymer dispersions and also to the use of the aqueous polymer dispersions in pressure sensitive adhesives and, respectively, pressure sensitive adhesive compositions, especially in pressure sensitive adhesives for transparent substrates, such as plastics labels. The aqueous polymer dispersions have a polymer content of at least 55% by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, the polymer being composed of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M and having a glass transition temperature below &#x2212;10&#xb0; C., in which the dispersed polymer particles have a polymodal particle size distribution, in which at least 70% by weight have a particle diameter of below 350 nm.

Process for preparing aqueous polymer dispersions for adhesives

Described is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) polymer formed from (i) 50%-95% by weight of n-butyl acrylate, (ii) 1%-20% by weight of ethyl acrylate, (iii) 1%-20% by weight of vinyl acetate, (iv) 0.1%-5% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid or ethylenically unsaturated acid anhydride, and (v) 0% to 30% by weight of other ethylenically unsaturated compounds different from the monomers (i) to (iv). The PSA polymer can be used for producing self-adhesive articles, more particularly paper labels or film labels.

An adhesive is described, in particular for applications on substrate materials made of flexible PVC, comprising a polymer which is obtainable via free-radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated compounds and which is composed of at least 50% by weight of soft acrylate monomers with glass transition temperature below 0&#xb0; C., at least 1% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated nitriles, at least 1% by weight of hard acrylate monomers with glass transition temperature of at least 60&#xb0; C., at least 0.1% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated acid monomers, and at least 0.01% by weight of monomers having at least two non-conjugated, polymerizable vinyl groups, where the polymerization reaction takes place via staged polymerization, and at least one portion of the soft acrylate monomers is polymerized in a first polymerization stage, and at least one portion of the hard acrylate monomers is polymerized in a second or subsequent polymerization stage. Uses of the adhesive for the bonding of substrates made of flexible PVC are also described, as also are self-adhesive items with a PVC foil as substrate material and with a coating of the adhesive of the invention.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive for PVC foils

The use of an aqueous polyurethane dispersion adhesive is described for producing biodisintegratable composite foils where at least two substrates are adhesive-bonded to one another with use of the polyurethane dispersion adhesive, where at least one of the substrates is a biodisintegrable polymer foil. At least 60% by weight of the polyurethane is composed of diisocyanates, polyesterdiols, and at least one bifunctional carboxylic acid selected from dihydroxycarboxylic acids and diaminocarboxylic acids.
