This invention relates to a composition comprising nano-structured metal oxide particles (particularly, zirconia) and at least one stabilizing agent, a method to produce the composition, and a method to produce the thermally stable nano-structured particles. The method to produce the nano-structured particles comprises first preparing a base solution and a nanoparticle precursor solution, then combining these solutions at a final pH 7 or greater to precipitate a colloidal hydrous oxide. The colloidal hydrous oxide is then treated with at least one silicate, phosphate, or aluminum phosphate stabilizing agent and dried. These nano-structured particle products have high thermal stability and are particularly advantageous in applications as catalysts or catalyst supports that operate at high temperatures.

The invention concerns the use of a film-forming titanium dioxide dispersion for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces exposed to light, by depositing a film of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on said surfaces, the continuous phase of said dispersion comprising water and/or at least an alcohol with boiling point at less than 120&#xb0; C., said dispersion having, when it comprises water, a pH different by at least 1 unit of the value of the titanium dioxide isoelectric pH in said dispersion. The invention also concerns a film-forming titanium dioxide dispersion further comprises a film-forming polymer. The invention further concerns a method for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces exposed to light which consists in depositing and then drying on said surfaces a titanium oxide film-forming dispersion.

The present invention is directed to a process for obtaining a substrate provided with a coating having photocatalytic properties, wherein the coating includes crystallized particles of an oxide of a metal A having photocatalytic properties. The crystallized particles are incorporated into the coating using a mineral binder comprising at least one oxide of a metal B also having photocatalytic properties in the crystallized state. The coating optionally includes at least oxide of a metal M devoid of photocatalytic properties and/or at least one silicon compound of the silicon oxide SiO type. The coating is deposited from liquid-phase dispersions containing the crystallized particles of the oxide of metal A and at least one precursor compound for the oxide of metal B of the binder and optionally a precursor compound for the oxide of metal M and for the Si compound, in a relative proportion A/(B&plus;M&plus;Si) by weight of the metals and Si ranging between 60/40 and 40/60. The present invention is also directed to substrates containing a photocatalytic coating and to liquid-phase dispersions which are used in the preparation of the photocatalytic coatings.

The invention concerns a dispersion of photocatalytic titanium dioxide particles, wherein the liquid phase comprises at least a cross-linking catalyst and at least a polyorganosiloxane either of formula (I) M D Q (O R ) , or of formula (II): M&agr;D&bgr;T&ggr;(O1/2R )&egr;. The invention also concerns the use of this dispersion for treating substrates.

The invention relates to a substrate provided, on at least a portion of one of its faces, with a coating with a photocatalytic property based on titanium dioxide which is at least partially crystalline and which is incorporated in the said coating partly in the form of particles predominantly crystallized in the anatase form. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of this substrate and organic dispersions of titanium dioxide particles used in the said process for the preparation of the substrate.
