An embodiment provides a method for stirring a sample in a cell, including: providing a cell comprising a sample chamber; placing a boron-doped diamond electrode on an inner surface of the sample chamber, placing a removable stir bar in the sample chamber, the removable stir bar directly contacting and touching the boron-doped diamond electrode; and wherein the stir bar can be operated to rotate within the sample chamber upon the boron-doped diamond electrode. An embodiment provides a method for transferring information from at least one instrument to an application, including: establishing a central protocol structure, wherein the central protocol structure defines a format for information transmitted utilizing the central protocol structure; transmitting over a short-range wireless communication channel information from the at least one device to the application, wherein the information is formatted in a broadcast packet in view of the central protocol structure; receiving, at the application, information from the at least one device; and performing, within the application, an action with respect to the information within the application, wherein the performing comprises deciphering the information contained in view of the central protocol structure.

Dynamic wireless information transmission

An embodiment provides a method for measuring an analyte of a sample, including: introducing a sample to a sample region of a measurement device; the measurement device comprising: a measurement electrode and a ground electrode contacting the sample; a low-slope reference electrode in a reference electrode assembly having an electrolyte solution, wherein the electrolyte solution is in contact with the low-slope reference electrode; wherein the electrolyte solution is electrically coupled to the sample via at least one junction; and measuring a first potential between the measurement electrode and the ground electrode; measuring a second potential between the low-slope reference electrode and the ground electrode; determining an analyte in the sample by comparing the first potential and the second potential. An embodiment provides a method for measuring an alkalinity of an aqueous sample, including: introducing an aqueous sample to a voltammetric pH electrode; holding the potential of a voltammetric pH electrode at a pH end point potential; applying a voltage step waveform comprising at least one potential pulse to the voltammetric pH electrode; titrating the aqueous sample; and measuring a current output resulting from the voltage step waveform, wherein the measuring comprises square wave amperometry. An embodiment provides a method for measuring a characteristic of an aqueous sample, including: introducing the aqueous sample to a titration region and a reaction region of a measurement device, wherein the titration region comprises a pH electrode and a protonator electrode contacting a first portion of an aqueous sample, wherein the reaction region comprises a counter electrode contacting a second portion of the aqueous sample; placing an electrolyte reservoir in a state of electrical continuity with the titration region and the reaction region, wherein the electrolyte reservoir comprises a reference electrode, wherein the volume of the electrolyte reservoir comprises a large volume of an electrolyte; and determining a characteristic of the aqueous sample by measuring an electrochemical characteristic between the reference electrode and at least one of: the pH electrode and the counter electrode. Isolating interferences in alkalinity measurement

An embodiment provides a method for compensating for inteferants in measurement of alkalinity in a reagent-less system, including: introducing an aqueous sample into a measurement device comprising one or more series of electrodes; applying an electrical signal to the aqueous sample using the one or more series of electrodes, wherein the electrical signal is selected from the group consisting of: current and voltage; identifying, during application of the electrical signal, that the electrical signal reaches an oxidation threshold and measuring, prior to reaching the oxidation threshold, a first electrical response to the electrical signal, the first electrical response attributable to interferants in the aqueous sample; identifying, during application of the electrical signal, that the electrical signal reaches an endpoint and measuring, from the oxidation threshold to the endpoint, a second electrical response to the electrical signal; and measuring an alkalinity of the aqueous sample based upon a difference between the first electrical response and the second electrical response. Alkalinity measurement of an aqueous sample

An embodiment provides a probe, including: an ion selective shell that includes a pH electrode bathed in an electrolyte and/or buffer solution; a plurality of conductive electrodes coaxially arranged respective to the pH electrode; the plurality of conductive electrodes being electrically isolated on a substrate displaced between the pH electrode and a reference electrode, and including: at least a first conductive electrode that is exposed to sample fluid at a terminal end of the probe proximate to the ion selective shell and disposed on the surface of an electrode substrate proximate to a terminal end of the reference electrode; and at least a second conductive electrode that is exposed to the sample fluid at the terminal end of the probe proximate to the ion selective shell and disposed on the surface of an el electrode substrate proximate to the terminal end of the reference electrode; the probe further including the reference electrode arranged about and along a longitudinal axis of the probe and bathed in a reference buffer and/or electrolyte solution. An embodiment provides a method for determining the alkalinity of an aqueous sample using an alkalinity sensor, including: monitoring the pH of an aqueous sample using a pH sensor in a sample cell, the pH sensor including a pH sensor electrode made of boron-doped diamond; generating hydronium ions, using a hydronium generator, in the aqueous sample in the sample cell, the hydronium generator including a hydronium-generating electrode; changing the pH of the aqueous sample by causing the hydronium generator to generate an amount of hydronium ions in the aqueous sample; quantifying and converting a current or charge to the number of hydronium ions produced to an end point of the electrochemical titration, the end point correlating to the alkalinity of a sample; and analyzing the alkalinity of the aqueous sample based on the generated amount of hydronium ions and the resulting change in pH monitored by the pH sensor.

Described is a lab-on-a-chip device and a method employing a lab-on-a-chip device for determining the concentration of species present in water.

A sensor for measurement of free chlorine and of total chlorine in aqueous solution including a working electrode having a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed on the surface thereof, producing a barrier which reduces the generation of background currents when electrical potentials are applied to the electrode, and blocks the reduction or oxidation of interfering species in the solution, is described. Such SAMs have also been found to block the efficient reduction of chlorine as well. However, N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) has been found to effectively transport electrons across the SAM; that is, an oxidized form of DPD produced by a reaction with chlorine is capable of penetrating the SAM such that the reduction of the oxidized DPD species can occur. The generated reduction current is correlated with the concentration of chlorine in solution. Total chlorine may be determined by the addition of an iodide salt.
