A liner () for a shaped-charge () that is compressively formed from a mixture of powdered metal, powdered metal binder, and a selected quantity of nanoparticle material, is used to achieve improved penetration depths during perforation of a wellbore. Exemplary nanoparticles include lead, tin, copper, molybdenum, etc. Such nanoparticles increase the density, sound speed, or acoustic impedance of the liner. In another embodiment, the added nanoparticles comprise reactive materials which, after penetration into the formation, cause secondary reactions in the perforations.

A method of controlling a dynamic pressure created during detonation of a shaped charge comprises: positioning the shaped charge in a wellbore, wherein the shaped charge comprises a main explosive load, wherein a substance is included in the main explosive load or is positioned adjacent to the main explosive load, wherein the substance increases or decreases the dynamic pressure or increases or decreases the duration of a pressure pulse created during detonation of the shaped charge; whereas a substantially identical shaped charge without the substance does not increase or decrease the dynamic pressure nor increase or decrease the duration of the pressure pulse during detonation. A method of controlling the balance of a portion of a wellbore comprises: positioning the shaped charge in the portion of the wellbore; and creating a desired balance in the portion of the wellbore.

A method may include positioning at least one calibration disk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner and positioning a pellet in the CT scanner. The at least one calibration disk and the pellet may both be made of a same powder exhibiting a known density. The method may further include scanning the at least one calibration disk and the pellet using the CT scanner to obtain one or more CT images of the pellet and the at least one calibration disk, and comparing a density of the pellet with the known density of the at least one calibration disk based on the one or more CT images.

A shaped charge liner comprises a powder, and the powder comprises a blend of particles. The particles comprise a core material, a first reactant material in intimate contact with the core material, and a second reactant material in intimate contact with the first reactant, where the core material has a density greater than 10 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc).

The perforation gun comprises a tool body, the tool body defining at least one shouldered hole wherein the shouldered hole comprises a hole through a wall of the tool body and a shoulder that is thinner than the wall of the tool body and at least one perforating explosive charge disposed within the tool body.

A shaped charge liner is provided. The shaped charge liner comprises a first material denser than 10 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc) and a reactive material. The first material is concentrated in a middle of the liner and decreased in at least one of an apex and a skirt of the liner, and the reactive material is concentrated in at least one of the apex and the skirt of the liner and decreased in the middle of the liner.

A perforating gun assembly useful in hydrocarbon well completion. The gun is assembled in a carrier made from straight walled tubing as a primary structural member with complementary male and female threads cut into opposite ends so that gun assemblies may be directly connected together. The male coupling includes a reinforcing sleeve threaded into an internal thread. An alignment pin is positioned in the carrier extending through the reinforcing ring and into the interior of the carrier. A charge assembly includes a charge holder tube with upper and lower alignment fixtures. The lower alignment fixture includes an alignment slot for mating with the alignment pin and a shoulder for supporting the charge assembly on the sleeve. The upper alignment fixture has an alignment pin for mating with an alignment slot in the carrier. A retainer ring may be threaded into the upper female threads to prevent removal of the charge assembly from the carrier.

Perforating gun

The invention uses a pair of opposed tabs on the charge holder to engage a groove in the case of the shape charge. The case is generally conical in shape. However, the front opening of the case has both a first and second circumferential ridge separated by a groove. The diameter of the groove generally matches the distance between tabs. The second ridge can have a flat milled thereon to allow case to be inserted until the tabs contact the forward or first ridge. This locates the tabs between the first and second ridges and over the groove. The case is then rotated so that the tabs are captured between the two ridges. Once installed, the detonation cord is attached to the case. The cord helps prevent any rotation of the case, thereby securing it into the charge holder. Thus, the use of easily milled tabs on the charge holder in conjunction with an easily milled groove and flats on the case provide an improved apparatus and method for securing the shape charge into the charge holder of a perforation gun. When the charges are all installed, and the detonation cord is properly linked between each charge, then the charge holder can be placed in a carrier.
