Automated testing of an application under test (AUT) often requires providing valid responses to an authentication challenge. Many AUTs require a username and password and, increasingly, a time-based one-time password (TOTP) that complicate automated testing. By storing a shared secret on a client device, a human can train an automated testing application to select the shared secret and provide the shared secret to a shared secret provider. The shared secret provider then provides a token code as the TOTP. The shared secret may be stored as a graphical element, such as a quick response (QR) code, and may further correspond to a particular username used to test the AUT.

Automated testing of user interfaces requiring a time-based one-time password (TOTP)

A request is received from a browser (e.g., a tool that runs on top of or in a browser). The request is to authenticate via an authentication credential provided from a communication device that is external to a test communication device running the browser. The request is queued in a request queue. The authentication credential is received from an interceptor that intercepts the authentication credential in the external communication device. The authentication credential is sent to the browser, which in turn sends the authentication credential to the application under test. This completes the authentication process in the application under test. The request is then removed from the request queue. This allows for an automated multi-factor authentication process that can be used for testing the application under test.

Overcoming multi-factor authentication in user interface based automation script

A login macro to automatically log into a web application running on a server computing device is generated from a provided username, a provided password, and a provided network address of the web application. The login macro can be generated regardless of whether the web application is logged into at a starting web page at the provided network address or at a sign-in web page navigable from the starting web page. After the login macro has been generated, that usage the login macro successfully results in logging into the web application running on the server computing device can be verified.
