This invention provides a tool for presenting items for selection by a user of a data processing system and for executing the selected items. Each item of the menus and dialogues is an individual and independent object in an object database, referred to as an interface object. These objects can be added or deleted independent of each other, allowing greater extendability and customization of the interface. The data within each of the interface objects and the selections from a user determine which of the interface objects will make up any one of several logical frame presentations at any one time to be presented to a user. The interface tool of this invention is adaptable for use with any one of a plurality of graphic libraries for presenting the actual screen image of the logical frame presentation to the user. In addition, the interface tool utilizes the message facilities of the system to present the elements of the interface in multiple languages. More specifically, the interface tool of this invention is used for managing the system resources of a data processing system by a user.

Integrated sub-nanometer-scale electron beam systems

An apparatus for producing an electron beam, comprising a support structure; a miniature ultrahigh vacuum chamber comprising a superconducting single walled metallic-type carbon nanotube comprised of a cylindrical wall, a proximal end disposed upon and sealed to the support structure, and a distal end comprising an electron-transparent structure; an electron beam emitting tip comprising a second carbon nanotube embedded in the support structure and disposed within the superconducting single walled metallic-type carbon nanotube, the second carbon nanotube having an inner surface with a thin conductive coating disposed thereupon; and means for creating an electrical potential difference the electron beam emitting tip and the cylindrical wall of said superconducting carbon nanotube. Tip for nanoscanning electron microscope

A device for guiding a charged particle beam comprising a first superconducting nano-channel. In one embodiment, the device comprises a superconducting nano-channel consisting essentially of a superconducting material in the form of a tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a bend disposed between said proximal end and said distal end. In another embodiment, the device is formed by a substrate, a first area of superconducting material coated on the substrate and having a first edge, a second area of superconducting material coated on the substrate and having a second edge, the first edge of the first area of superconducting material and the second edge of the second area of superconducting material are substantially parallel. In another embodiment, the device comprises a superconducting nano-channel formed by a plurality of nano-scale superconducting rods disposed around a central region.

Devices for guiding and manipulating electron beams

An apparatus for producing an electron beam, containing a vacuum chamber, a source of electron beams within the vacuum chamber, and a device for focusing the electrons beams. An electron transparent window is formed at the end of the vacuum chamber; and the vacuum chamber has a volume of less than about 1 cubic millimeter and a pressure of less than 10 Torr. In one embodiment, the focusing device is located outside of the vacuum chamber.

Point source for producing electrons beams

A method and apparatus for determining the availability of a workstation in a distributed network. Availability is determined using an Availability Measurement System having a Downtime unit, an Availability Disable unit, and a Calculation unit. During the initialization of the workstation, a heartbeat monitor daemon is created to store, at predetermined time intervals, timestamps of the network. Once the workstation becomes unavailable, the recording of the timestamps ceases, thus, allowing an accurate representation of when the workstation became unavailable. Upon the return of the workstation to the status of available, the Downtime unit reads the current time of the network and the stored timestamp to calculate the duration of the unavailability of the workstation. The duration is then stored for later calculation of availability of the workstation for a defined interval of time using the Calculation unit. The Availability Measurement System may be disabled using the Availability Disable unit, thus, allowing selected durations of unavailability to be excluded from an availability calculation.

Method and system for measuring availability in a distributed network

A distance-controlled tunneling transducer comprises a plurality of tunnel tips arranged in an array at a tunneling distance from an electrically conductive surface of a storage medium. Each tip is attached to a respective cantilever beam permitting the distance between each tip and the surface to be individually pre-adjusted electrostatically. Arranged in juxtaposition with each cantilever beam is an active control circuit for adjusting the tip-to-surface distance during operation of the storage unit, thus preventing crashes of the associated tip into possible asperities on the surface of the recording medium. Each control circuit is designed such that its operating voltage concurrently serves to pre-adjust its associated cantilever beam and to maintain the tip-to-surface distance essentially constant.
