Embodiments disclosed herein include photonics systems with a dual polarization module. In an embodiment, a photonics patch comprises a patch substrate, and a photonics die over a first surface of the patch substrate. In an embodiment, a multiplexer is over a second surface of the patch substrate. In an embodiment, a first optical path from the photonics die to the multiplexer is provided for propagating a first optical signal, and a second optical path from the photonics die to the multiplexer is provided for propagating a second optical signal. In an embodiment, a Faraday rotator is provided along the second optical path to convert the second optical signal from a first mode to a second mode before reaching the multiplexer.

Embodiments described herein may be related to apparatuses, processes, and techniques related to a dual polarization chiplet that may be used by an optical receiver to split multi-polarized light traveling on a single fiber and carrying two or more light signals into two or more fibers each carrying the particular light signal. The dual polarization chiplet may also be used by an optical transmitter to combine multiple light signals to be transmitted onto a single fiber, where each of the multiple light signals are represented by a different polarization of a wavelength on the single fiber. Converting multiple light signals into and out of a single wavelength with multiple polarizations to increase optical bandwidth

A communication unit comprises a plurality of antenna element feeds () for coupling to a plurality of antenna elements of an antenna array, where each antenna element feed comprises at least one coupler; and a plurality of transmitters operably coupled to the plurality of antenna element feeds. At least one transmitter of the plurality of transmitters comprises: an input for receiving a first signal and at least one second signal; beamformer logic arranged to apply independent beamform weights (RefBF1, RefBF2) on the first signal and the at least one second signal of the transmitter respectively, wherein each of the independent beamform weights is allocated on a per sector basis; and a signal combiner arranged to combine the first signal and the second signal to produce a combined signal, such as that the combined signal supports a plurality of sectored beams.

Communication unit, integrated circuit and method for generating a plurality of sectored beams

A method for calibrating an antenna array coupled to a plurality of transmitters via a plurality of couplers and a plurality of antenna element feeds is described. The method comprises, at a communication unit: selecting and coupling at least one coupler to a calibration receiver in a feedback path in the communication unit; scaling at least one first signal by at least one first beamform weight; applying the scaled at least one first signal to a first transmitter of the plurality of transmitters and routing the scaled at least one first signal via the selected at least one coupler to the calibration receiver; generating a reference signal by selecting and scaling the at least one first signal by at least one second beamform weight substantially equal to the at least one first beamform weight; comparing the at least one first signal scaled with the at least one first beamform weight with the at least one first signal reference signal scaled by the at least one second beamform weight to determine at least one first parameter result; storing the at least one first parameter result of the comparison associated with the first transmitter; repeating for subsequent transmitters the steps of selecting and coupling a further coupler, scaling, applying at least one further signal to a further transmitter of the plurality of transmitters, generating a further reference signal, comparing and storing at least one further parameter result until the plurality of couplers have been selected; and determining at least one calibration correction coefficient from a plurality of parameter results for applying to at least one second signal input to at least one transmitter of the plurality of transmitters coupled to the antenna array to substantially equalize a transfer function of a plurality of transmit paths to antenna element feeds for the at least one second signal having beamform weights applied thereto.

Communication unit and method of antenna array calibration

An active antenna test system comprising an active antenna unit comprising: a test signal generator arranged to generate at least a first test signal and at least one second test signal; a plurality of transmitter modules operably coupled to the test signal generator wherein the plurality of transmitter modules are arranged to simultaneously process the first test signal and at least one second test signal to produce at least one radio frequency test signal therefrom; and at least one receiver module arranged to process one or more signals falling in at least one spectral band determined to be susceptible to intermodulation distortion products caused by the at least one radio frequency test signal being generated from the first test signal and at least one second test signal; and an intermodulation determination module operably coupled to the at least one receiver module and arranged to determine a first received intermodulation performance. A first transmitter module of the plurality of transmitter modules is operably uncoupled from the test signal generator and at least a first test signal and at least one second test signal re-applied to the remaining transmitter modules, such that the intermodulation determination module determines a second received intermodulation performance in order to determine an intermodulation distortion contribution of the first transmitter module therefrom.

Active antenna system and methods of determining intermodulation distortion performance

A method for assigning, in a database, a relationship between at least one logical channel and at least one antenna element feed that is coupleable to at least one antenna element of an antenna arrangement, is described. The method comprises either: applying a first signal to at least one first logical channel; and detecting whether there is a presence of a radio frequency signal converted from the first signal on at least one first antenna element feed; or applying a second signal to at least one first antenna element feed coupleable to at least one first antenna element of the antenna arrangement; and detecting whether there is a presence of a logical signal converted from the second signal on at least one first logical channel. The method further comprises assigning in the database in response thereto a relationship between the at least one first logical channel and the at least one first antenna element feed. This advantageously allows assigning of logical channels via a plurality of transceivers to a plurality of antenna elements. Furthermore, a logical channel to beamform coefficient assignment may be determined for the antenna array.

Network element, integrated circuit and method of determining connectivity from antenna elements to transceiver line-ups

An active antenna test system is described. The active antenna test system comprises an active antenna unit comprising: a plurality of antenna elements; at least one processor; a plurality of transceiver modules operably coupled to the at least one processor and arranged to receive at least one first baseband signal for transmission via at least one of the plurality of antenna elements and arranged to pass at least one second baseband signal thereto received and down-converted from at least one of the plurality of antenna elements; and at least one switching module operably coupling the plurality of antenna modules to the plurality of transceiver modules. The active antenna test system also comprises at least one communication test equipment, such as a radio frequency, RF, test module and at least one baseband processor. The active antenna unit further comprises at least one externally connectable radio frequency, RF, test port operably coupled to the at least one switching module and arranged to externally couple the at least one communication test equipment to at least one of the plurality of transceiver modules for conductive testing.

Active antenna system and methods of testing

A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) calibration device () for calibrating a phase relationship between at least two signals present on at least two radio frequency (RF) paths coupling a wireless communication unit and the MIMO calibration device () is described. The MIMO calibration device () is operably coupleable via at least two RF paths between a wireless communication unit and an antenna arrangement (). The calibration device () comprises a processing module () configured to: process a coupled amount of at least one first signal from a first path operably coupleable to a first polarization of the antenna arrangement () to determine at least one pilot signal from said at least one first signal; process a coupled amount of at least one second signal from a second path operably coupleable to at least one second polarization feed of antenna arrangement (), different to the first polarization, to determine the at least one pilot signal from said at least one second signal; and determine a first phase relationship of the same pilot signal between the at least two RF paths.

MIMO antenna calibration device, integrated circuit and method for compensating phase mismatch

A semiconductor device comprising interface logic for transmitting data bursts across an interface. The interface logic is arranged to transmit bursts of data across the interface such that the start of a burst of data is substantially aligned with a symbol interval (SI) boundary. The interface logic is further arranged to apply an offset to the SI boundary at the start of the burst of data.

Method and apparatus for transmitting data

A wireless network element is operably couplable to an antenna array for communicating with at least one remote wireless communication unit. The antenna array comprises a plurality of radiating elements where at least one first radiating element of the plurality of radiating elements is arranged to create a radiation pattern in a sector of a communication cell. The wireless network element comprises a receiver arranged to receive and process at least one signal from the at least one remote wireless communication unit via the at least one first radiating element. A method for calibrating () an antenna array comprises a plurality of antenna elements coupled to a plurality of respective receive paths in a wireless communication system. The method comprises, in receive mode, applying a test signal to an individual single receive path () of the plurality of receive paths; and feeding back the test signal via a switched coupler network. The method further comprises running a receive calibration measurement routine to determine at least one measurement value used to calibrate the individual signal receive path and waiting for at least one converged measurement value; and extracting () the converged measurement value for at least one individual receive path. The steps of applying, running, extracting for a next individual single receive path are repeated until the calibration routine has completed (). The method further comprises selecting a converged measurement value of at least one individual receive path from a plurality of receive paths () to form a reference receiver calibration result (); normalizing a plurality of at least one measurement values of the plurality of receive paths using the reference receiver calibration result (); and applying a normalized value to at least one of the plurality of receive paths.

Communication system, apparatus and methods for calibrating an antenna array

An apparatus comprises a number of sub-systems and a control interface operably coupled to sub-systems for routing data therebetween. A strobe generation function is operably coupled to the control interface and configured to generate a plurality of different strobe signals to differentiate between different intended receiving devices. Thus, different strobe signals may be multiplexed onto a single control interface link, based on a pulse width or voltage magnitude characteristics of the respective strobe signals. A strobe decoder function is operably coupled to the control interface and configured to decode a plurality of different strobe signals to differentiate between triggering sub-systems on receiving devices.

A calibration signal generator for use in a balancing circuit calibration device in a radio receiver, the calibration signal generator comprising: a means of amplifying a clocking signal from a clocking signal generator to provide a first calibration signal; a means of generating a second calibration signal from the clocking signal, the first and second calibration signals being transmissible to a one or more mixing circuits in the balancing circuit calibration device; and a means synchronizing the operation of other circuit elements in the balancing circuit calibration device with the clocking signal; characterized in that the clocking signal generator is present in the radio receiver and used therein for other functions.

A network element for a wireless communication system is locatable to couple at least one base station to an antenna array comprising a plurality of antenna elements. The network element comprises a plurality of independent transceiver circuits coupled to at least one of a plurality of respective antenna elements of the antenna array; and logic arranged to apply at least one complex digital signal to at least one transceiver signal path of a transceiver circuit of the plurality of independent transceiver circuits. A feedback path is arranged to provide feedback of the at least one complex digital signal such that it is capable of facilitating determination of latency mismatch error response between at least two transceiver signal paths. Adjustment means comprises delay logic arranged to receive a complex digital signal and provide a modified representation of the received complex digital signal in response to the latency mismatch error response of the at least two transceiver signal path.

Communication system, network element and method for antenna array calibration

An integrated circuit comprising processing logic for operably coupling to radio frequency (RF) receiver circuitry arranged to receive a wireless network signal. The receiver circuitry generates in-phase and quadrature digital baseband representations of the wireless network signal. The processing logic determines quadrature (I/Q) imbalance of the RF receiver circuitry based on the in-phase and quadrature digital baseband representations of the wireless network signal.
